Trailering Questions

I say this allot, trailers need to be tongue heavy or they will sway and flip!

Use at least 4 tiedowns, more if ya got 'em. I'm old and been around bikes forever. The stories I can tell about bikes falling over... Sigh.

Tom

was only thinking about short runs skull , eg.. next week a mates just bought a gpx 750 just up the rd (27kls) and my trailer is just that little bit to short , had the same prob couple of weeks ago with a bmw k1 I bought from the same place , finished up having to pay some one 100 bucks to run out there with his car trailer so looking for alternatives (toe hitch comes off chassie)... steve tell you about the 750 he just bought (different bike and NOT a xs ) hes getting like the rest of us and needs a bigger shed

Those hitch tow devices that use the front wheel are great for an emergency. My little wife could throw it in the car and pick me up. I've thought about whipping one up for years. One thing that scares me is the stories I've heard about a bike dropping into gear while towed. It's never high gear unfortunetly.

Pickups are hard to load. I've done it allot but I'm getting old so have to take that into consideration.

Trailers need the tongue heavy or they will sway and flip! Think dart or arrow, they won't fly backwards because the weight is in the front. Same with a trailer, unless the weight is in the rear and the trailer wants to turn around.

I love this idea! This could potentially mean calling the wife in an emergency and having her toss this thing in the back of the van and coming to get me. I was always wondering about the bike tipping over while turning in one of these things, but it appears the correct design remedies that problem.

If it really ends up being long distance, you can always pop the chain off, you need nothing more than a flathead to pop the link off and yank the chain out. It'll be harder to put it back on, but hey, you'll be home!

Scootermagoo: was that bike at rockerbox last summer? Pretty sure I remember seeing it there in the motorcycle classics show area.
Sorry boys, but a van is the ticket.

Why leave your stuff out in the open, rain, wind, sun thieves, when it can ride warm and dry and locked inside the van?
3 XS and room to spare.... MPG mid 20's on diesel body's rusting out bad now, wife says it just helps motorcycle negotiations...........hauls a trailer has seting for 8 that comes out quick. hold 3/4 of a cord of firewood, We've been camping all over the country with a futon in the back. Even has a diesel aux heater. push the button and it's warm inside in 20 minutes.

futon 2 bikes a big conduit bender and three weeks of camping gear.

Yes sir it was. It was my first time there. It's changed just a little bit since then and I am still adding all the final details. I just have so much fun riding it. If I go this year, I'll PM you and we can introduce ourselves.

If you only have an occasional need for a trailer, then renting one from uHaul might be a good option.
Their small bike trailer will easily handle an XS650 & its costs only around $20 for 24 hours.

Lol, who was that guy timemachine ?
Anyway, I'll mention that I've "upgraded" my SWB Ford..
What needs to be mentioned is that the convenience of having a truck ready to haul home a bike is sometimes a little trouble of it's own. Especially if there are no XS650's to be found.
One may haul home a great idea, like a CX500 Turbo project Lol !
Anybody feel the need for a CX500 Turbo ? I can hook you right up ;)
But I'm sure keepin the new country gal tho 20181006_130644.jpg 20181012_184305.jpg 20181020_133852.jpg

gggGary, you cant have my truck because we all know that you would be smiling and happily trucking all over picking up XS650's and hauling them home in 5th so fast, well It just wouldn't be fair to the rest of us ! See, you better just stay in the shop and work on em :)
And JRP01, if you're nuts enough to talk about a CX500 Turbo project.. pm me . It's in Vancouver WA
Cheers - R

i bought a 4x8 trailer, which actually is like 50" x 98 " to allow for hauling sheets. it has a hinged ramp, 12 inch tires, and is galvanized in 2004 for 450$. i can put 800# roadstar off and on myself. it is worth double that now. i am a van/SUV guy, so the trailer is indispensable. It sits there 99% of the time, but when i see a good deal on a bike, off i go. I also loan it to select friends and remind them no chains or hooks (straps only) on the galvanized. But when i go camping, i pack them in the TOY HAULER . There was a guy at bike week had a T shirt said" nice trailer bitch!" ; meaning "you should have rode to the event, if you were a real biker"....................but that only applies to iron butt younger guys.....................

Just a reminder here of how well an XS650 fits in the back of an old F150 short bed.
"Like a glove" with the straps off it just stands there.
Too darn spontaneous easy. I got in deep again.
But hey :banghead:

Hi brian,
I've seen an ad for a product that'll take the "trailer queen" look off your bike and thus avoid the iron butt guys' ridicule.
It's a rattlecan to spray on the bike. It contains used engine oil, authentic road dirt and a guaranteed 17% of genuine insect parts.
I think it could have been a spoof but it was in a Harley magazine so perhaps not.
