Project Canuck- 84 XS650 Project Build

OK, think I have found the cause of the clutch switch not working. Looks like the diode in the starter lockout relay is bad. Only works for the neutral/sidestand lockout. Dead circuit on the clutch switch side of the relay diode. Also confirmed it using the test procedure in the manual. Now to source a new one. Thought I had one as my Guzzi uses the same relays but only had a spare one without a diode.

As for the instrument lights looks to be the bulbs. They have power going to them. Don't think I am going to replace them yet. Lets see if I get bored enough to take them apart. I had one apart when I was rebuilding the bike and all I remember is the gasket is a pain in the ass to put back. Not sure I want to go through that again.

Tank will be ready tomorrow from the painters. Went to look at it today and had a couple of nibs on it from the clear coat. Painter said he would wet sand them out and return it tomorrow. Looks pretty good so looking forward to it.

I have found that the instrument bulbs have a short life on an XS650 (I’ll bet it’s the vibration).

Some folks have sourced LED replacements - I’ll have to do that same. The issue with my ‘76 is that they use the old style push & turn bulbs rather than the bayonet style used on the later bikes.

So, does anyone have a Lockout relay lying around. It is part# 12R-81950-01-01. It is the relay that controls the starter interlock (not cutoff) on the classic for the neutral and clutch switch. One leg is dead on mine. I can jump the blue and black/yellow wires on the relay to have the clutch and neutral work off the same pin but when the bike is in gear and the clutch is pulled in the neutral light comes on. Lets you start the bike now in gear, but then you have no indicator to tell you that you are truly in neutral. I can see that going bad at some point.

Prices are approaching $100 for a new one up hear and not worth that amount of coin. Worse case I will just install a separate relay for the clutch switch but thought I would see if someone has a working spare one for a reasonable donation.

Any chance of a picture of this relay? Maybe with it installed on the bike? I have a few spare relays but not sure what they are right off.

Not sure if they will ship to Canada but here is a link to an Amazon site that shows one for $12.95, not genuine Yamaha but still might work. If they won't ship to you I could order it and forward it to you.

Don't you love it when some one says they are including a link and then forgets to hit PASTE?

Link missing?

Here's one on Ebay for 13 bucks. It's a dash 01-00 instead of the -01-01 you have but Bike Bandit sez it supersedes your -01-01

I saw those (On Amazon and EBay, and they will both ship to Canada). May give it a shot. Always a little suspect on quality when I see that much of a difference in price

Guy's sold 65... 3 negative comments vs 5,000 positive in the last yr. 13 bucks and free shipping vs. 60+ bucks for OEM. I'd call that a no brainer...

Ebay site did not work for some reason. They got back to me pretty quick and cancelling the order. Had to order them from their Amazon site.

Good news on the tank front. Got it back from the painters. Looks great. All the ripples are gone. Just need to re-tap all the holes from the powder coating. Lets see how that goes.

Actually I would be a little suspect of someone with zero negatives! At that price you could buy 4 or 5 for the cost of one OEM that may have been sitting a a shelf for 20 years!

Dang! That’s purdy!

It didn't look that shiny the first time I went to pick it up. There were some blemishes in the clear coat so the painter said he would keep it for another day and color sand and polish it. I would say he exceeded my expectations.

Now I am all set. Have a trusted powdercoater and trusted painter.
