1983 XS 650 Special Build

There are no attachment holes for the lower side cover on the beauty plate, a tab along the cover's lower edge simply ducks behind the plate .....

14.5 c here, so I will see if the Rustoleum will stick to the frame. Bottom side looks good. Will have lunch while it gets dry enough to flip over.
Four zip ties seem strong enough to take it down stairs to the assembly area. aka basement [pATTACH]130890[/ATTACH]

P. O. had boxed up the motor so I wheeled it into the garage, uncrated it and found that it was overall quite clean- I had figured half a day just to get it presentable enough to install, so pulled the oil filters out and replaced with new ones. The side filter had a few alloy sparkles in it, the bottom screen was "relieved" but otherwise fine, magnets did not have any chunks on them, so I hope I have a decent motor.

Not positive but I may have a pair of those tin plates out in the barn off a 1982. If there is interest let me know and I'll try digging them out.

Not quite squeaky clean, but much improved

If you are not going to be putting on the lower side covers, you may want to consider removing the tabs on the frame for it if not already done. There is also the loop on the right hand side for the security chain unless you are keeping that. I took it off mine since it resides behind the lower covers that I did not put on but personal choice on that one.

Lakeview says not interested but is anyone else is let me know , did find a pair of them.

While the frame is in the house (my wife returns from visiting son and family early next week), I have been bolting stuff back on it - battery box, new bronze bushinged swing arm and shocks and then the wiring harness. The one that came off it was more than a bit ratty and since I had a lightly used 83 harness on it went. Whoever last had it in service had defeated the side stand and clutch switches so all looked good till I looked at the TCI connector.

PO had been using a unit with 6 connectors rather than 7, had cut off the one that matched my TCI and bodged on what you see. Anyway, I salvaged the proper connector off the old harness and made it right.
Next- adventures with mount bolts lost inside the speedo and my fix - needed bulbs replaced anyway.

From the factory, the speedo and tach mount bolts are held in by a set of flanges. The flanges get spread on the second or third removal and no.longer hold the bolts in the housing. When they disappear inside, ya got to open up the instrument, replace the light bulbs of course, and figure out how to hold them. My solution was to cut a disc out of a pop can side, pierce it with a hole just a bit smaller than the bolt, snug it down as shown and problem solved!

Motor Mounting Day
Got this brain wave that a pool noodle could provide material to protect the frame rails while installing the motor. As it turns out, I think they are too bulky to work around and they were 20181209_121826.jpg discarded about ten minutes in. Could be effective for the front down tubes if you forget to put nuts on the exhaust studs though.

So here is the set up.
Since both the bike and the motor are on the floor, there should be a minimum of lifting, he thought. And really it was not that bad. In less than an hour on my own, I had it in the frame and bolted into three mounts.
The scrap of old carpet is much nicer to work on in December than bare concrete, duh.

Up next will be getting wheels on it and cleaning a set of carbs for it. Have not yet figured how to replace those little balls and springs on the choke rod for the BS34's.
I thought I had a black rear fender but it was for something larger, maybe an XS 11, so will try painting one of my ratty chrome Special items. 2 birds, 1 stone, eh?

Just hooking up all the empty sockets, I can sort them later when I see what still functions.
