Other Bikes and Workshop Woes

I haven't shared my last build from 2015 with anyone for quite some time and came across this thread and figured why not.

Picked up a 1982 XV750 craigslist beater for $500, looked like this to start (you really needed to see the high flake 70s spiderman paint job in the sunlight to fully appreciate)

Spent the better part of a year searching for the unicorn spoked rear wheel hub for this bike while I worked on it. Graphed in a fully custom subframe and rear shock mount to accept a remote rez adjustable shock off a Triumph speed triple. Modified the yoke to accept an entire front end off a Yamaha R6. Custom harness, LED headlight/lights, Shorai batt, etc. Custom paint and homemade emblems. Lots of headaches, built and shit-canned parts to get it right, and beer over the course of the build but she was worth it. I plan to pass this one down to my son (14 at the time) since this was our first build together.

Brassneck thats a beautiful bike, nice work! I'd love to know more about it, do you have a build thread for this bike somewhere?
Thanks JCE,

Ya, I have a link to my XS build which Mailman shared. Unfortunately, I don't have a build on my race bikes, if that's what you're looking for....but if you have any questions, would be happy to share.

Great work on this bike Brassneck really like the engine improvements. Did you port and polish the head at all? The carburetors, what did you do there? Just asking this because when you lump the cam for better performance, IMO, you may as well throw more gas down it’s guts and try to get the burnt shit out fast too :) looking good, also can you adjust the timing on the go at all?

Mick
Mick, sorry I missed this...As to carbs, I went with Keihin PE24, with velocity stacks. It breathes great and flows a lot more fuel. :)

Wow JCE - that is a beautiful bike! Not that I am in any way an expert but to me, I t looks vaguely like a Vincent.

That rear wheel is quite cool - what on earth did it come from? As far as I am aware, very few shaft driven bikes ever had spoked wheels (older MotoGuzzis, BMWs and the earliest Gold Wings are the only ones that come to mind right now).

You should consider bringing it to the bike show at the Vintage Yamaha Rally at the Iron Horse next autumn - you’d win a prize for sure!

I like prizes, especially when they come in bottles with lots of hops!
No but seriously, that rear wheel is like a unicorn. I camped out on ebay for 6 months before I finally saw one show up and man did I pay for it. From what I understand there is only one year of one model (it may have been a euro model) that came with this rear spoke wheel 1986 XV700SS. I almost gave in several times but the project I envisioned had to have spoke wheels so it was a must. Had Buchanan's rap it with 17" Excels and SS spokes with a 3/4" offset and it fit great!

Wow that’s more that a year ago, thanks for the reply, I feel older, look older and now are freezing my butt off in Tasmania. Good to know you hoofed more gas down it’s guts, I bet it does sound the goods...

You and me both!! Ha ha.

I bet it does sound the goods...

It does! Here's a little vid on my dyno run from earlier in the year before the season started...Note: this is the newer bike that I built for the 2018 season. I ended up in 5th place overall, and finally made it on the podium near the end of the season. Enjoy!

It's a whopping 17hp at around an estimated 7000rpms. (Estimated the rpm's as I don't have a tach on there and the sensor's they have for their computer was messing with my ignition/spark...so we skipped it). Since this video, I've changed out the ignition and we've got it up closer to 18.5-19hp. :)

G'day Mick,

Both of my bikes now. 2004 Yamaha Roadstar Midnight and 1983 XS 650. Always thinking of other bikes, but love the simplicity of both of these. Would really miss each one of these if ever would be gone. I guess will need to build a bigger garage and just add more bikes to it. Lol Roadstar has a bunch of add ons but the bike is real close to the way the xs which was one of the selling points for me. Aftermarket parts support (a few years ago prior to production end) Carb, TCI ignition and great forum following. 20181216_134047.jpg20181216_165147.jpg

Looks nice J-C but it’s too bad that we live in places where we cannot ride every day.

Although...it’s looking pretty nice outside today so I might just dig out the SV650 and hit a Tim’s.
