Bob, the parts pics aren't clear on this, and I'm not sure of the XS2.
But on the XS1s, the round can flasher relay mounts to the bottom of the battery box by way of a round clamp. The flasher body needs to be grounded thru the round clamp, to the battery box. Which requires that the battery box be grounded...

Thanks Steve,
Yeah I’ve thought about the fact that all the previous grounding points have been either painted or powder coated over. I will look at what you are referring to and make sure I shine up all ground points. Thanks for the heads up!

5Twins and Steve,
Thanks for looking into this , this makes more sense now. The bearings I bought are way wider and beefier than the two slim bearings in the disc. The other thing is , I think there probably should’ve been a dust shield , that is missing, so....
A sealed bearing , I think, would be a plus.
I’m going to look into this.
Thanks guys!

The outer side on mine had a 16005 bearing and a 30x45x5 seal. You can find the seal at 123bearings.

The inner side same bearing no seal at the bearing. It did have a o-ring around the outer bearing housing. I put my o-ring somewhere where I would not loose it and now can't find it.

Just popped out the bearings out of the disk on my 1972. Two of the 16005 bearings with a spacer between them and the rubber seal on the "outside?" and on the "inner side" a dust shield/oil slinger between the bearing and the shoulder on the tube that goes through the two bearings.

If anyone needs pictures or parts let me know.

Went to order bearings and a seal from 123bearing. They have them, problem is they are in France. Shipping is costly.

Did you go ahead and pull the trigger on them? I also noticed that the shipping was ridiculously expensive , and figured something was up with that.

With that, a little update. First of all, to everyone that has tried to help me figure out those bearings , THANK YOU !
I have learned a whole bunch about measuring and cross referencing bearings. This morning I spent a lot of quality time inspecting and measuring my front disc and bearings.

I would like to confirm something for 2M, those bearings I bought , that were supposed to fit the disc ( but don’t) are indeed the exact dimensions of the front wheel bearings for my bike. I had a spare new one and I measured the two bearings. The only difference is the dust shield.

Second, It’s hell getting old. I was complaining about missing dust seals, so last night I was going through MY OWN POSTS to try and refresh my memory and sure enough, I had a whole bag full of parts that I forgot about that had all my components in it. I’m not missing a single thing.

And lastly, all my fuss over those disc bearings turned out to be all for naught. After giving that bearing that I said felt crunchy, a good cleaning, it now feels fine. It must’ve had som grit in there. I’m going to leave it alone and just put fresh grease in them. I apologize if I’ve caused anyone any inconvenience.

So now I’m working on cleaning up the chain guard and front fender and painting the front disc carrier.
The weather is being uncooperative, threatening rain off and on for the next week.

I’ll post more when I have something worth showing.
Later,
Bob

Bob, that's what is so good about this forum, always at least two or three people who have the answer to just about any question!

That picture of the parts looks just like what I have on my bench right now, well possibly with the exception of the "o"ring. Don' recall seeing that but it might still be stuck in the housing under some gunk!

If on second look you decide one or more of your bearings are questionable just say the word and these two will be in the mail Monday AM!

This is for 2M’s mental roladex, on the XS2 the flasher unit bolts to the rear fender. Having said that, good grounding points will be carefully maintained.

No going to get from EBay

If you don't have one yet, get yourself one of these needle point attachments for your grease gun. It's excellent for injecting grease into bearings, and numerous other tight spots all over the bike .....

Here, I've just used it to inject the clutch cable elbow full of grease .....

That would be perfect! Harbor Freight?

Back in the seventies I had trouble with these bearings. Wore out three sets, I would notice the brake lever travel increaseing, the calipers must have been pushing on one side and wearing the bearings.
An unusual disc mounting, handy as it was to remove the front wheel leaving the disc in place, can’t have been too great as I don’t know of any other bikes fitted with this design. But you may know more.

As memory serves, are there some rubber dampers that fit in the driving dog recesses?
