Question,

For for my build, my frame (78' XS650) started off with disk rear for brakes. I now have a switched to drum (I have a drum swing arm.) I am now left with the ugly rear master cylinder mounts (see picture.)

So my question to the guru's is;

Are the Rear Brake Master Cylinder mounts surface weld onto the frame, or is the frame (or mounts) beveled for the round bar for the mounts?

Essentially I want to cut the mounts off and have it look like a frame for a drum rear. But only if the mount are surface welded on. I don't want to have to patch the frame up (weld), only grind.

Cheers, and thanks for the input in advance

Hi 'brat,
I'd say leave the rear disk m/c mounts right where they are, so the bike can be swapped back to a disk rear if you (or the next owner) want to.
FYI the only difference between a disk & a drum swingarm is a different torque stay attachment lug.
My son's '80 Special's swingarm had the second tab welded on so he could swap between 18" drum wire wheel and 16" disk cast wheel as the fancy took him.

Without having cut one open right there I can about guarantee the frame is "notched" and full bungs are welded into the notches. That said you could still grind them flush and bondo the through holes.

That's the plan. Cut, and grind it down. Weld and patch up where required.
