79F Standard Rescue in progress

Ha haa, my Vesrah shoe troubles are over for me cuz those shoes are already in a box going to Texas where TwoManyXS1Bs gets a turn to measure, fit, lathe turn, or chisel em any way he wants to :)

XS650F just got more of the front end on today.
See it's teetering on a jack stand till the wheels are on.
I haven't tipped my bikes over yet but I just gotta get it on its rubber. Maybe tomorrow .

79F 120mph reading speedo appears to be the same as a 79 Special speedo. Tho I do not have one off hand to prove.
Now that my front end is back on and I gave the front wheel a good spin (plenty of em)
It seems my speedo stays stuck at 0 mph..
No needle movement. The cable is spinning freely and all . Speedo drive nicely lubed.
The speedo sounds like it is working. ( tik tik etc)
This bike sat in a moist climate before I hauled it home.
Do any of you think I can easily bring this speedo back to life or is it time to start looking for a replacement ?

Hi Machine,
didja spin the wheel enough to see if the odometer works?
Or spin the speedo with a power drill to see if the speedo or the drive connection is the problem?
If your speedo turns out to be FUBAR and you don't mind a different year or model speedo,
just about any XS-series round-body speedo will bolt straight on and read correctly although the warning lights may differ.
If you end up with a Canadian Metric/Imperial speedo the odometer reads KM same as the Euros.

Put a drill (in reverse) on the cable and see if that breaks it loose.

You'll have to open 'er up and have a look-see I guess. The spring inside may be broken. I test the instruments off the bike using a short length of old speedo/tach cable (w/ square end to insert into instrument) chucked up in a drill. Even spinning my "test" cable in the right direction by hand is usually enough to move the instrument needle a little bit.

Thats a good point and no not yet. I am being a little cautious so far as I dont want to further damage the action yet.
A drill drive is on my list to do tho
Thanks !

Here is a speedometer drive cable question. I've noticed on 3 XS Standards that the speedometer drive cable will worm and fall its way right out to the ground if it is disconnected at the wheel drive unit.
Why didn't Yamaha just install the cable into the housing sheath the other direction ?
I have reversed my cable innard the other way so that the fixed "stay" collar is up top at the speedo connection . Seems like a no brainer ?
Surely it is not just dumb bad luck that all my cables were opposite this and the innard just slides right out when you disconnect the front wheel.
Is there a reason ?
Thanks ,

Randy, take your speedo and jostle/wiggle/twist it, face up, like it was a doorknob on a horizontal cellar door. That should loosen it up, and you'll see the needle bounce back-and-forth.

If not, crack 'er open time...

Will rattle that doorknob !
I know I could find a "Special" gauge. Actually saw a cheap 750 gauge just last weekend (140mph?) idk.Maybe its the same. But , I really hope for more quick fixes and just want this bike serviced, stock, and running. Even that is asking a bit.

Randy's VB-225 shoes arrived today, and a quick cursory inspection shows some oddities compared to my recently purchased VB-225.

Randy's box is labeled "organic", mine isn't.

Randy's friction lining appears to be a bit darker and slightly thinner than mine.

The box labels are different, barcodes are different.
Randy's label on top, mine below.

Very strange.
They're both Vesrah VB-225.
It's a bold new world.

To keep from cluttering Randy's thread, this stuff needs to go into a different thread about brakes, preferably one of 5twins' threads?

My recently purchased 225's are just like yours, not labeled "organic". Maybe a packaging change? No telling how old Randy's are, probably a few years at least I'll bet. The big question is are they exactly the same size as your new set, and do they fit in one of your wheels?

I know it probably doesn't mean much as far as function goes, but I really like the way these shoes look. They just look like good, well made brake shoes. Vesrah also seems to be about the most reasonably priced of the well known brand names.
