Hey y'all. I recently purchased a neglected non-running xs650. The frame appears to be a 1983 xs650 (trim S or body type RS - I'm not sure) and the engine (447-711531,) a xs650D (USA) 1977. At any rate, I'm trying to ID the gas tank that came with the bike. The frame (front) and the tank (rear) were modified to fit.

How do I determine the make and model Yamaha that the tank originally belonged to or, at least narrow it down? It's too large for what I have in mind but, I'd like to know what I have. My guess is a xs750 possibly, xs850 from the early 80s. There are no identifiable markings on the gas tank. Also, the bike came with two molded fiberglass covers. No idea what they're for... Exhaust pipe covers?... Any help is much appreciated.

This is my first post. Please contact me if I posted in the wrong forum. First Yamaha, too. Just trying to figure this bike out.

Thanks,

Kilday

Hi Kilday and welcome,
I'd say ignore those envious list members who want your XS750 tank and put it right back on your bike especially if the bike's paint job matches it.
There ain't no such thing as carrying too much gas and restoring the XS650 frame's front tank mounts to fit a stock XS650 tank is a hassle you don't need.

Thank you. I regularly look on eBay as well as Google Images to identify parts. I will probably list it later this week.

Thanks for the welcome. The bike frame is black and all of it a complete mess at the moment. I plan to tear her down and build a cafe racer which is something I've wanted to do for years. This is going to be a learning process.

That's a beautiful paint job.......The XS750/850 tanks sell for a couple of hundred dollars and that can be without petcocks. Makes yours with a good paint job a hell of a lot more and as a set, specially if the side covers are painted the same.............

Beautiful motorcycles. I purchased the bike last week but, it's a bit of a mess. I paid $750 with delivery so, a little more than the cost of two XS750 triple fuel tanks in very good condition. Here's what I'm working with... I hope that I have bitten off more than I can chew.

I think you did pretty good. There's some expensive parts and mods done to it. The Hagon shocks are several hundred as is the kit required to adapt the larger disc mag on the rear. Brake calipers look like Brembos? The carbs may give you issues. They look like the PWK knock-off kit from Mike's. They're poor quality Chinese copies of real Keihin PWK carbs and many have had problems with them.

Thanks for the information. I really appreciate your help. The bike came with a box of parts including the old carbs. I'll check the carbs on the bike when I get home this evening. I've been slowly going through the bike in order to determine what I need to replace. I have tons of questions.

You're correct. They're Mike's XS Performance Carb XS650 (32mm). Also, you helped me identify a number of extra parts that came with the bike. Whoever worked on it, ordered a kit.

Thanks!

Hi Kilday,
like they said, the upgrades alone would cost more than $750 if you bought 'em new so yeah! Total deal!
And as you want a café racer, most of the work has already been done and all you need is a bumstop seat.
Some things I'd recommend:-
Front fork NEEDS a brace. The stock front fender has one built in. A TKAT or other fork brace works too.
Those bars ain't café, unless you really like the upright stance swap 'em for clubmans.
Bike as shown has no rear light or signals. I like effin' great big ones for safety's sake.
You can do better than those rusted shortie mufflers and IMHO wrapped pipes are super-ugly.
While I'd only buy rubber things from them as a last resort, Mikes pipes and mufflers are OK.
