Airbox to cones...

71XS1B, crank shaft windage? Not from what I understand. When you first start the engine the cold oil flows very slowly, due to being thick. The place the sump filter teas out is right by where the oil pump draws oil in. It is also the weakest part of the filter screnn. If you rev the engine before the oil thins a bit and oil flow increases the draw from the oil pump tears the weak spot out of the oil filter.
You could use a sump extension six inches deep and this won't change.
In inxs's pic you will se an oil cooler up by the styeering neck. This cooler drops the oil temps by about 40-50 degrees F. I have one very simular on mine and did some temp testing. Before and after.
Adding the oil filter like his without cooling fins drops temps about 5 degrees F. the filter fins maybe another 5 to 10 degrees F.
They also add oil capacity.
If you do a lot of city stop and go or ride in hot weather The oil cooler is a good thing.

Im putting the xs cone filters on my 82 heritage special 2 stock mikuni bs34 carbs, im running the stock headers and will be installing Megaphone Bell End upswept style motorcycle muffler. Im needing to buy new fuel lines and fuel filter , what should i be considering when pirchasing the fuel lines and fuel filter? Are there a assortment of fuel lines with different I.D.? Any suggestions on getting the right parts and what are some pros/cons of running this setup? Sorry if these are silly questions, this is my first bike and first build.

Thanks,
Jeff

Be prepared to up the jetting in your carbs if you switch to pods if you hadn't planned to already. If you haven't read this part yet, don't buy mikesxs pods. Are you running stock tank? Take your tank and carbs to a local shop and figure out what gas line will work best for. I've never really bothered with expensive fuel filters, the plastic ones work fine to me.

i already have the pods from mikesxs. whats wrong with them? yeah im running the stock tank and stock carbs, i dont have money to take my bike to a shop. i have brembo monster caliper for the front with a 16mm bore m/c, which ive read is too big, so i will looking to convert to a smaller size bore. im needing to find a brake cable for it and find the conversion kit to have a smaller bore. any suggestions?

The stock carbs just don't work well with Mikes pods. I've never tried them but I've never read anything good about them on here. The good news is you can get a good pair such as UNI's for around $35.

chased carb problems with pod filters, uni filters worked awesome
pod filters sit on shelf, might make interesting pasties!

I've run Mikes pods, genuine K&N and UNI pods. Never had a problem with any of them. For the money, UNI filters are great. Run the Mikes pods. You'll probably be OK.

Remembering the huge tuning improvements myself switching from "cones" to Uni pods on a No Air Box XS.
Now Im facing a similar question.
79F with the stock airbox halves.
Used K&N filters in the box halves.
They are dirty. Worth cleaning and using ? Or a waste of time ?
Perhaps its best to find stock in the box filters ?
Thanks, -RT

Yes, well worth cleaning and using them. K&N pods don't work well but the airbox versions are just fine. Since K&N filters have become popular on cars now, most auto parts store will have what's called the K&N filter "recharger" kit. It contains the special cleaner required and the special K&N filter oil.

Again good news, K&N in box filters seem like a fine re-usable option. The jetting is still stock 79 so well see.
In the past I fell into the large group who thought K&N individuals without the airbox were a good idea. Not so much .

Yes, I started out in that camp too because I had used them previously on many other bikes. But, what I didn't realize at the time was that none of those other bikes had CV carbs.

That Ichiban character cut some rubber from the K&N's to expose the air ports at the back of the carb. I'm wondering now if that's actually a good fix for the K&N's. Anyone out there got some K&N's to give it a go?
