Why is it when I look at rear axle for my '71 XS650 I can never find them. I can find '74 and up but never '73 prior. What is the difference between the years or can I actually get away with using a late model axle?

I believe the 73> axles were shorter. a bud o mine hard tailed an 80 frame, but all he had at the time was a 72 axle/wheel. when he got the later year rim, it didnt fit. had to use a bottle jack to spread the plates apart. HE took it all back apart just last weekend.
What I would suggest, is take a later axle to a voc/tech machine shop, and have them turn it down, unless you have the tools to do it, of course. I had one turned down for free. The cotter pin hole was a little crooked though. I ended up not using it. I was in the welding shop next to it, and needed some extra credit.

The only differance in axle length I'm aware of is between drum and disk wheels, the axle is slightly longer on the disk wheel.

The swing arms on the E and F are the same as the SE and SF's, so the rear axle would interchange on the earlier and later models......... i think there are probably different spacers for the disk and drum brakes, i should think without having a look

Quick part # search of XS650 rear axle for drum brake models gave these results
disc brake model also has rear axle part # 341-25381-00-00

Good information if your using stock Yamaha parts, has anybody done research to see what other bike wheels will fit? Wondering as I live in the Philippines and it seems most parts are not available unless you are willing to pay the outrageous import tax..but it seems that you can find a lot of older Kawa, Honda and Suzuki parts so I found a set of wire wheels off a old Kawa 4 cyl....Just wondering if any of you guys have tried this..Thanks..Lee

I have done some wheel swapping but only to other Yamaha wheels. The TX750 twin wheels are a direct swap. SR500 fronts are a direct swap. The TX/XS500 rear will swap with some spacer fabbing and sprocket spacing. All these use 650 size axles so no bearing changes are needed.

As stated the 70-73 axles are shorter. These years used axle plates 1/4 inch thick where the later used axle plates 3/8 inch thick. You can use a later axle in an early bike. Just put a washer or two under the head of the axle.
There is no difference in axle length between the 74 up drum or disc brake.

What is the thread count and size of a 81 xs650 rear axle? I need to buy a new nut

Hi Boles,
a $4 plastic caliper will tell you the thread diameter and the thread gauge you'll find in most tap and die sets will give you the thread count.
And if the nut is hooped most likely the axle thread ain't too healthy either so check the parts for sale column for replacements.

Boles44 take your axle to a good hardware store. Look in the metric section of the nuts and bolts. Find a nut that fits.

Rear axle from '77 xs750 triple fits but has a longer "head" on the non-threaded end. I am using one on my 650 that came from my triple after it was totaled...

Great job as usual 2M. Upon eyeballing the left spacer/dust cover, the 72 & 75 appear to be very close. You left out the length of the 74 & newer dust cover. Either you are slipping or am I to assume they are the same. LOL. And we all know what happens when we assume! The axle difference is 25mm and the right spacer difference is 9.7mm. That leaves15.3mm left to fill. The 75 chain adjusters and swingarm ends are beefier, so maybe add 4mm to each side and we still have ~7.3mm. I just may soon attempt to swap a 75 swingarm and 75 front end to my 72. I know I need to use the 75 front wheel, and the rear should just be a matter of using the 75 wheel axle spacers and brake arm. I'm slowly dismantling the 75 suspension.

Hope you are feeling well and staying safe. Thanks, Steve!

Left spacer and dust cover are the same for all years so there is no '74 and newer one.
Thank you for clearing that up. Suddenly, life has meaning again. LOL! I would have had to take my 72 dust cover off to compare. So, I can only assume that the chain adjusters and beefier swingarm ends take up the rest of the length, eh?

I would assume so. I've never had any of the early ones, never seen them up close even.
