79F Standard Rescue in progress

Chain wax in this XS's case was just everywhere under the left side cover, worm gear, chain guard, rear wheel, swingarm, and the chain was a gritty mess! I've never been a fan of the little black buggars chain wax throws on these stylin aluminum wheels.
Now after chipping chain wax off of components just to service them, Im an even bigger fan of lubing your chain with 80 wt gear oil !
This chain was thoroughly cleaned now and soaked in gear oil and it is back on to go even farther. It passes the rear sprocket link pull test on a newer aluminum sprocket.

Saturday Sunshine ! Yahoo.
The clean and fun part of this project is ready to happen. Carbs, airbox, etc. All comfortable and clean work today with the fun components.
First up, eyeball sync the carbs in the blue sky sunlight. My garage has been a little dark and Cold !
My (Our) bicycle cruiser fleet is also tuned and ready to ride the Columbia river path likely this afternoon.

Carbs installed. I like this bottle of "all purpose oil" lol.. it is very light wt. The small spout comes in handy. So I lubed the throttle body shafts in places, eye sync'd the throttle plates.
Fuel line selection and clamping is very inportant as we know because after the airbox halves are in. Nobody wants to go back to the the fuel lines, its just too cramped.
And another cool tool came into play. My very short screwdriver. That darn neutral switch under the carbs. The tiny screw and washer . tough to not drop and lose that ! Pics..

The air box grime was quite an obvious clue as to how this bike died and wouldn't restart for the previous owner. The dirty K&Ns couldnt have been able to breathe well among other things, like very old rust/gas too.
These stock air filters felt much nicer sliding right into place. The whole BS38 and airbox and battery box combination is actually a very nicely fit bundle but it does take patience to "float" it all in place well before tightening it all up.
Bummer today as I discovered my carb to airbox clamps are MIA .. hmm, I prob tossed them but dont remember that and rarely do just lose things.. well for a long time anyway Lol..
This week I'll be coming up with a temporary fuel supply hopefully. Anxious to test run this one soon, fingers crossed ..

Looking good Randy! Won’t be long now! ;)

Very nice feeling when a very tight screw broke free inside my Rt. Switch, just to pull the protective sheath back into position. The switches are veru clean inside ! Original cable ties even.

Even though the switches look clean inside, I'd still be servicing them - grease the moving parts, dielectric grease all the contacts. Then they should be good again for another 10 to 20 years, lol.

True, but I'll have this bike moved on in 20 days after a few rides.
Hey, This is funny. Just went for an electrical system check for the first time. Battery in key on and Nothin, Zilch .. turns out just because your battery is "charged" it isnt if it has a dead cell ? :lmao:
Charging up my old spare now..

You're going to flip it? The '79 Standard is a rare bird, I think I'd be holding onto that one. The '78's are more common place, that's the one to sell.

Ya, its kinda rare I know thats why I've been so stubborn to change anything even though it would improve the bike. Its just too stock and original.
I have bigger ideas for my 78E now.
Good news is with a poorly charged battery this 79F seems to pass. Signals wont quite flash but it has spark.
I have a test fuel supply in the works but I have to go away for the weekend.
The High Desert of Oregon. Hope to hear this bike very soon ! Fingers crossed that it charges.

Super Fun Friday bike time ! The 79F not only runs and sounds quite good, It charges at 14.5 + This is all such a huge joy today !
The only negative is that upon filling er carbs up it became clear that the right carb seat leaks and overfills the bowl.
This prevented very much running and I am sure hoping to get the timing light readings but maybe not today. (It is close)
The engine fired right up with just a few kicks cold ! And again warm.
It Idled well. The cam chain is very quiet. And It Charges ! Yes, I said that again ! So Happy ..
Now I am determined to shake that fuel tank like a paint shaker with the polishing stones inside and work on the inside rust condition so this bike can be ridden soon !
Family visiting today, back at it soon.
-Randy

Yesterday I left off with a good running XS650 but with a serious rt. Carb overflow condition. All I had to do this afternoon was do a "road side style" float bowl drop. (aye my neck) and when I dropped the float/needle out came a boulder of a rock Lol which must have immediately flowed into my carb. Past the inline filter ? IDK
With the carb cleaned now I have a VERY smooth sounding running XS650, love the sound
No more leaks found yet. This is very satisfying !
Im also with this Dog for the weekend so, Off we go for now..
Cheers to all
 - RT

5twins I sure appreciate the following and advice along this "rescue"
This has apparently been a fortunate gamble on this one.
I'll get the tank cleaned and post a ride hopefully soon !
Thanks , Randy
