Ok, so here are pics of my rear tire, including the manufacture date in 2017, so it should be good. These look really bad to me. I wonder if JP cycles has a return or warrenty on lroducts they sell. This is ridiculous for a 2 year old tire with less than 4,000 miles.

No pics, sorry but put on 30 miles. Then up on the lift and dumped oil and filter. Bout what you'd expect for 30 miles I guess, a bit sparkly but no large chucks and no milky beige , what I was mainly concerned about.
Riding position is a bit "racy" Full day rides prolly out of the question. 6 speed close ratio tranny you gotta rev n slip the clutch bit from a stop, You want to be in 2nd leaving a 50MPH corner and it's loafing in 6th at 85 the legal speed limit. Overall not far different than a hotted up XS650, considering I'm observing break in RPM limits....
If you haven't seen the mentions, it's an NOS 2014 buell 1190SX

Growing old, mandatory, growing up? Optional.
A big pile of 81 special parts from a chopper project showed up today, related; Milwaukee iron's 16" spoke rear wheel disappeared....
OK I'll get off this thread til resto gets ready for it's first ride of the year, hopefully tomorrow.

You sure the manufacture date is not 2007?
Have to wonder where that tire was stored before you got it or after you got it.

Not trying to point a finger at anyone just that no way a two year old tire should look like that!

I have a bike sitting in the barn that to the best of my knowledge has a rear tire that is at least
twelve years old, have not looked at the build date recently, but it only looks a slight bit worse than that!

I think I'd be contacting the place you bought it and also try to find a contact for the manufacture and
email them some of those pictures and let them know you have posted this to a large online site.

Great looking engine and I really like that stand, it even has wheels!
Thanks, Jax. The stand was a hybrid of what I saw from 5twins, if memory serves. Very versatile. Rotisserie style on wheels. Easy to move around. Also built it so I can easily split the cases with a small jack on one side with traditional engine stand mounted upside down to pry against. I'll paint it up once I'm done with this motor so it looks more shop-worthy.

Well, today was a big day for me.

Last Monday a buddy came with his big pickup and trailer and we took my new SV650 and Honda ST1300 to a dealership in Chatham (about 70 km away). The SV just needed a check over (it is nearly new and still under warranty) and the ST1300 needed fork seals and a valve clearance check / adjustment. I could do these tasks, but frankly, they would take more energy than I’ve got right now and I need the ST for a trip in May so I figured I’d just farm it out and use my energy for more fun stuff.

Today, I went to meet Daughter #3 in Chatham for lunch and on the way, I picked up Lakeview who accompanied me to the dealership where the work on the SV650 was done. The ST1300 will take a bit longer.

Anyhow, I rode the SV650 back to his place to store it (thanks so much Angus!!) and then I took off in the car for lunch. I’ll go back some evening and ride the SV back to Windsor. On the short 5 km ride to Lakeview’s home I found that I could easily get my right foot up on the peg and that my knee seemed quite comfortable. Let me assure you that there is no shortage of strength in my knee (so no problem holding the bike up) - it’s more a question of flexing it that far and the numbness which seems endemic in knee replacements. Anyhow - it worked just fine.

When I got home, it was still nice and sunny and warm out and so, I unplugged Lucille’s battery tender, took her down from the hoist where she’s been all winter, turned on the petcocks and enricher lever and hit the button.....

Vrrooom on the very first push!

I rode over to a gas station and checked the air and filled her up and noted that riding the XS650 was even more comfortable than the SV650 (the XS650 pegs are a bit lower relative to the seat and bars) - so... GOOD TO GO!

Yip Yahhhh!

First pic in the first post clearly says 2017. I emailed JP earlier today, but I think I’ll call them too.

The SG had developed a charging problem. It's battery would be fully charged (disconnecting the charger before the ride) and the voltage would decrease during the ride and the battery voltage would be a volt or more higher than the voltage on the brown wire. So today, I'm checking circuit's in the headlight housing. Then I took off the air cleaners and disconnected the Fiat Voltage regulator I'd been running and low and behold the brown wire voltage jumped to closer to battery voltage! I had swapped in a new one I received earlier in the week. HHmmm, no difference. Rechecked the stator for shorts to ground (none)and continuity(good). took the stator off to check the rotor. It's not a year old. 2.8 to 3.4 ohms. It's aftermarket. NUTS. In the almost 10 yrs of ownership of this bike, I can count at least 4 rotors and that many or more in regulators. This bike does not blow fuses or have burned wires. What's going on? I'm running grounds from the regulator mounting to battery neg. WTH?

Thaddeus, this comes from the '70s.
Back in the old shop daze, we used the term "channel cracking. You'll find more info if you Google "tire sidewall cracking".

Here's the hard part. Back then, new or low-time, low-mileage tires with channel cracking were covered by a non-publicly disclosed warranty. Kept secret by the tire guys, but under federal mandate for exchange. Shops and insiders knew about this, and applied certain secret verbiage to get replacements. Dunno how this is handled nowadays.

Essentially, you *should* have some form of reparation. Difficulty depends on the dealer. You may have to dig deep to find the published legalities...

One small contribution (and I agree with everything 2M said above): in the term “channel cracking”, the word “channel” refers to the logistics pathway or “channel” from the tire plant to the consumer.

Try using that term when you contact the tire company.
