After trying all sorts of ways to address a front brake squeal including anti squeal lubricant specially made for brake calipers, everything works....for a while. I have a NOS set of those anti squeal retainers for my 77D that I’m waiting to install. The thing I don’t like about that anti squeal lubricant that was using, is it feels like silicone and is very slippery, and as Gary mentioned, you have to be very careful about not getting any on your brake surfaces.
What I like about your Hylomar method is it sets up and you don’t have to worry about it migrating to your pads.

My front brake started squealing shortly after I installed aftermarket pads. I found out about this fix and tried it but it didn't help. What did solve the issue was the anti-squeal shims for behind the pads that were used on some of the later models. They are number 12 and 13 below .....

I'm not sure if you can buy any of these parts from Yamaha anymore. I scrounged mine from later calipers.

Shims! I put em back in when I find them. I think they are a bit dual purpose, the pads tend to wear unevenly ending up "angled", the shims help reduce this angled wear. Perhaps the angle adds to squealing?

The pad shims were a later thing (came along in '81) and Yamaha's second step towards combating squeal. The first attempt, adding the rubber pads to the little clips, didn't always help (as was the case for me).

Aah, that makes sense now. I only remember the pad shims on my 82 XJ650RJ which I believe had the same calipers as the XS's
Rt. & Lft. however, as it was dual disc.
I believe those discs were 5mm thick. The XJ650RJ brakes worked very well with braided steel lines.
I am trying to come up with a double disc set up on an XS which will maybe equal that braking performance.
Will be searching for a set of pad shims for Rt. & Lft. in the future.
So 81 up
