Well, just because they bothered your shoulders....
Rode a buckhorned special for 2-3yrs as a daily driver in Fla. back in the early 80's. Never had shoulder probs. Another buckhorn for 4 yrs in the 90's... still no shoulder probs. Actually never heard of anyone having shoulder probs 'till now.
Light riding is okay with them.

Ideal is palms facing down and forearms level with the ground. My buckhorn problem is something I've written about before on here. I reached the point where I couldn't raise my arms over my head. Not even to sleep. Diagnosed myself with rotator cuff problems. Pretty sure a surgeon would have operated. Instead, I pondered about what is doing this; what has changed? Had to be buckhorn bars. Took about as long to fully recover as it took to get that way. Every body is different as they say, but they're also the same. Could be you aren't prone to this. I've never heard of the problem elsewhere either, but that's my story.

I’ve been riding with mine since ‘82, no shoulder pain, very little arm fatigue on long trips! They seem to fit my 6ft, long arm body! I really don’t like to lean forward much while riding, unless I’m getting it,and when I do they are still comfortable for me! Some of those wide Harley bars and straight bars ain’t all that comfortable on an XS for a tall person! But I have been riding with them 40 + years now so my arms and shoulders and wrists, are definitely in tune with them! And yep my chrome started to flake, mainly around the brake fluid reservoir! Thinking about seeing if I can get them rechromed!

Be interesting to see how you get along with them now.
Bars, grips, tires and a lot of other things about bikes are what do you like. Nobody should try to tell somebody else what they should or should not like.

Be sure to get the hipster brown grips on them Wulfie!

...and FWIW, I agree wit GLJ. Ergonomics are simply too personal to make blanket statements IMO.

Never had any problems with my 83SK Buckhorns....I do agree with gggGary though that the riding position does tend to make the body sit in an odd position and on the tail bone, i have highway pegs and using those on straights would give the body enough variety that it didn't cause any problems ...It does make for a laidback/sedate type of riding, no leaning over the tank speed trials, although i would wind it out on a straight every so often to blow out the cobwebs. Now that's where the buckhorns do affect, because your sitting so upright the wind buffeting is severe and slows the bike down, (but then your bars create that affect as well),............ My main cruising speed was 105-120kph

Was a daily rider and done a lot of 2 hour each way trips, every second week up to my Fathers.

What i found on the 83 was the stupid step in the seat was right where my tailbone wanted to sit, was always trying to slide back.......... An 80 Special seat is the better of the Clip on Special seats, and seeing as how you have a bench seat that wont be a problem.

IMHO i think you would be better off with something like wj suggested.......But you've got nothing to loose by getting a free set to try out.......

I doubt I've hypnotized him into shoulder problems. I agree wholeheartedly with your statement. In fact that is one of the great things, the unspoken rule that you don't do that. On the other arm, if anybody develops something that starts with a twinge in the shoulder and progresses to your arms work in slo-mo, you'll know where to perhaps start looking.

....and if “too much”, is simply not enough....

Your belt SHOULD match your shoes, but you don’t need a brown seat. I wouldnt call those grips brown; maybe more of a cream soda. You know what they remind me of? Gummy colas. MMMmmmm.....Beautiful tank btw.

I think the goal of an industrial designer (looks designer) should be to make the product look like it would taste good. Where possible. Seriously.
