Great forum, been reading on this site for a while now. I picked up a xs 650 special II. Definitely not a creampuff lol, poor thing was left for dead in a shed for many years. I am closing in on my last project for a friend. We have completely redone a kz550 LTD with some tasteful changes. Well can't wait to get the next project started, thanks for a great site!

I actually have had the bike for about 8 months now, but in between building the kz550 and me and the wife welcoming our first child into the family I just recently had the time to start checking into the xs.
Yesterday I removed the carbs and soaked the all that needed cleaning in cleaning solution. Before starting I checked the timing chain, which needed adjustments and soaked the cylinders for a day with a little trans fluid in each cylinder. Put the carbs back on, made a temporary tank and installed new plugs. To my surprise it started on the fifth kick, and sounded pretty good. I wanted to make sure the engine did not need anything major. Next I will service the brakes so I can take a short ride to check the transmission.

Small update on my 650. Rebuilt the front caliper, also had a new master cylinder layin around so installed that too. " Just a inexpensive one from Amazon" brakes working great. So I rode it locally, not more than a few blocks from my house. All went well, shifted nicely. Decided to go the hard tail route so last night I ordered the tc Bros weld on kit. Will post some pics later this week when the kit arrives and the cutting and grinding begins!

Small update on my build. Got most of the rear cut, still have to smooth everything out. Set the new rear kind of in place just to get a visual of what it may look like......

Just some more mock up. Everything lined up as the directions stated. This is my first hardtail so any pointers are appreciated!

Great advice gggGary, thanks. I noticed the rear adjusters don't seem to line up right with the hardtail. I'll snap some pics later. It could be a simple shim, pretty sure the directions stated I could re-use all the OEM hardware.
