Is that anything like an ass whipping?

Eeeeeyyyyyeahhhh....it occasionally came out like that. It always started with him looking deep into my eyes from about 6" away and saying quietly, "Lookit Pete - here's the thing...".

If my answers were not satisfactory...well, then...:(

He was never cruel or abusive, but he did insist on proper conduct.

Pretty much the same thing with my Dad, except "quiet" wasn't one of his virtues.

Don't recall ever getting a spanking I didn't richly deserve.

Dad was a farmer, the son and grandson of farmers. Farmed with horses for a lot of years, and milked cows by hand for even more. He had forearms like Popeye.

One particular attitude adjustment I will never forget. I was around 15 (with all the attitude that entails) and weighed 150 or 160. I don't recall the exact infraction, but Dad reached around with one paw, grabbed me by the back of the neck and lifted until my gunboat-sized shoes cleared the floor by a couple of inches. For the duration of the following (distinctly one-sided) discussion, you may be sure he had my undivided attention!

Been there and have the complete tee-shirt collection. My Dad always said that I made every mistake in the book - but just once each.

Anytime I got one, I think it could have been handled some better way.... One thing I appreciate my father for is he never once hit me. I wouldn't be able to hit a child no matter how angry I was.

Here's a good movie if you have a couple of hours. Geo. Washington crossing the Delaware. Accurate in spirit but not to the letter, if that's important.

Was he a good grandpa?

Not especially, no. He didn't have much time for children and was gone before any of his grandchildren were old enough to be of interest to him. Definitely of the "children should be seen and not heard" persuasion.

My relationship with him changed a lot once I was old enough to leave home and go out on my own.

That sounds a lot worse than the reality. We were well cared for and raised to be respectable, responsible adults, but between the way he was raised as an only child plus working full time in a factory AND running a 120 acre farm, "playtime with Daddy" just wasn't a feature in our lives.

I trust my grandchildren and great-grandchildren have a different view of me. I'm a bit more of a disciplinarian than either my kids or grandkids, but as long as certain minimum standards are met, I made a point of playing with my grandkids and now their kids.

...and I’ll bet they’re very grateful for all that you have done for them and with them DE.

Speaking of grandpas. My paternal one died when I was six. I remember getting a ride on a horse or mule drawn sledge on the dirt road in front of his house. Not long ago I mentioned it to my mom and she got a surprised look on her face and said she remembered it too, and said he did it so I would have something to remember him by...
