My $Free.99 Project

One step closer!!!!

I lost my job last week, so hopefully I can strip some parts, sell/trade them and get this back together and sold to help keep the lights on...

Did some things last night.

Need to inventory existing parts and make a list to start checking off.

One thing that's "bothersome" is the seat doesn't look like it will easily fit. Anyone have a thought to differences between the years/models and seat compatibility?

Holy moly the right side pipe is NOT easy to install.... And I cannot find ANY way to install the exhaust port optimizer, as the install space is just so limited....

Any thoughts???

If your trying to put a Standard seat on a 78/79 Special hinged seat frame..........Have a look at this thread.........79XS has some god pics of how he done his
http://www.xs650.com/threads/standard-vs-special-vs-special-ii-seats.22157/

This is good to know. I'm still missing the latch from my seat, but I was thinking I'd need some spacers too.

I'd still leave them for later. Do the shakedown runs. Fix other things. Then come back to it, you'll have something to compare with...

Fair enough. So hypothetically speaking, if I need them, any thoughts on how to get the EPO's in and install the pipes?? ;)

wannabe; in all seriousness with those pipes an EPO seems a bit premature. I get what you are going after but how the engine runs is taking a back seat to the "look".
OK in black and white; those pipes aren't within a country mile of what 50 years of XS650 development has shown to be "best practices" exhaust design.
Prolly the best "band aid" would be some sort of restrictor at the exits, easy in, out, change to compare, improve.

Oh I'm completely aware they're not optimized for the motor, but I've them sitting on a shelf and have no other use for them currently. And most exhaust systems aren't that optimized, but they sure do make the approach to the bike that much nicer! I would 100% be down for some stock headpipes and slip on's (just like yours!) though, but since I've none, it doesn't fit the theme of the build (budget budget budget!!)

I did find out they're called "high and tight" pipes, but I'm unsure of the original manufacturer. I bought them off a forum member here awhile back. The EPO's were a great price and the purchase was solely based on internet readings and the size of said pipes.

1st thing's first is to get the bike running though! Hoping to have that done sooner than later, just need to get everything out of the way first.

I no longer need the 2-1 that was on there, so if anyone is interested, I'd be happy to let it go!

Also, I don't need the oil cooler and thermostatic bypass, so if anyone is interested, I'll make a great deal too!

Those do look good, There was a one man XS650 exhaust builder on the east coast that closed up, kinda rings a bell he built sets like that. I fer sher understand budget, use whatcha got, builds....
From what many have said; some sort of internal baffling seems to help a "straight pipe" exhaust. Not to mention reducing that cloying "exhaust valve ring" you hear with unbaffled pipes.

Gordon Scott maybe??

Sweet, just found a spare head bearing kit that I had bought who knows how long ago! That saves about $40!

Also found a set of carb mounting flanges that will hopefully work w/ the EX carbs. Will be installing the EX carb parts that I estimated will run the best based on the EX thread, and will then be working on doing everything to allow for a test fire in the simplest way. Also found my replacement wire harness from Hugh that I bought who knows when and that will be going on too.

Once I verify the motor runs w/o spewing fluids, I'll start buttoning up everything else.

Tentative plan is to do minton mods to forks (10 Wt oil w/ 1 extra oz of oil), fork seals, wheel bearings, swingarm bearings, rebuild brakes (will be doing the floating rotor up front and will drill a rear rotor to match the pattern as close as I can, brembo's front and rear, stainless lines) install cafe seat and hope like hell everything works!!

Does anyone have a list of the seals one can replace w/o splitting the cases?

So far, I see the tech topics for the left main seal and the clutch pushrod. What others can be done with the motor in frame?
