Mikuni maxed out

Hey I’m reporting back!

I’m just over 500 miles on the bike. I’ve since leaned the pilot out. I think I’m right around 20? I’d say between 17-22. I don’t recall now.
And I’m either middle clip or 2nd from top and a 180-185 main.

Sorry it’s not specific. Bikes been running so well that I’ve just forgotten about it. Any gear, any load, any RPM it’s always smooth. No hiccups or fuzzy spots. Just smooth.

Here are the plugs:

Carbon goes about 50-75% around the face of the plug.

I’m actually back because it left me stranded far from home. Just shut off as if you turned the key. No spark.

I tested coil per pamco instruction- good

(Bike is kickstart only w/ PMA)

So it’s kind of hard to test the pamco itself while i kick it and hold the multi meter.

But I just measured volts DC off of my cap and kicked it, and I can’t make over 4v. Soooooo?
Go to Petes website and read his troublehooting guides. Test with a battery. If it runs with a battery ignition is good.
 
I’m going to disregard my findings for PMA. That could be human error just from me trying to take a measurement while kicking the bike and reading a digital meter.

Just did the whole troubleshooting guide. Pamco seems chooched. Just no spark.

Connected my battery

Have 12.5-13v @ the pamco. Continuity at the grounds from end to end. Just no spark.

Not sure if that little 3 legged guy looks burnt or not???

Yea mine doesn’t even click when I spin the rotor.

According to the troubleshooting guide, all is good. Just seems pamco is bad.

Got my new ignition in under warranty.


But first-

Just to check, I put the original working ignition back on (the one that came with the bike, not the pamco I put on), and it had spark. But bike wouldn’t run. It would pop and kick back until I blew my ankle out.

Anyways. New new ignition on.
I disconnected my pma with suspicion.

Hooked battery up to my cap. And it started up first kick.

How I tell if the pma is killing my ignitions?
 
With the rectifier unplugged and measuring voltage from red and green wire. It measure 15-20v @ idle
 
In that link it tells you how to do that...........run the ignition off a different circuit to or from the battery and then run and test the voltage output from the PMA.........at idle and at full advance
 
I may be missing something............how are you testing the voltage after the Reg/Rect

I just posted a new thread about it.

The red and green wire that come out of it. It hooks to the + - on my cap. I just popped them off and held my meter leads on them while it was running. So that was the voltage going into my cap.
 
The common failure mode for electronic voltage regulators is "closed" IE the system starts "running wild" full time highest charging rate possible. Electronic components just HATE that. They much prefer a nice smoothly regulated 12-14 volts.

Pamco / XSCharge ignition: I fried my ignition by turning the key with spark plug caps off - not good. But after advice in this group by Jace Dunn and others, I got a TIP120 NDN transistor and replaced the burnt one. It's not the exact same as the one that was on the ignition but I just tested it and got spark on both sides. Only managed to get the bike to cough a few times, so still some troubleshooting to go. BUT, so far I got the spark back for $2...
 
Is there a way to isolate my ignition from high voltage? The system is fused, but I’d hate for the new reg to go out and cook my ignition in the process again.
