brushed metal tank

hey guys -

home depot didn't have the aircraft stuff - so i picked up the heavy duty paint remover, think that'll be okay?

"klean strip premium stripper"

I’m assuming the stripper at home depot is not intended for automotive paint. May work just as well, but i’ve unanimously heard “aircraft stripper” from every person i’ve ever met who’s taken paint off a bike. The side of the container says: “Intended for use on automotive surfaces. Designed specifically to remove two-component urethanes and epoxy finishes”.

Pep Boys was the only major retailer I found in New York City that sold it by the quart, but I would assume a more specilized store that sells supplies for body work would too. Probably more of those in LA than in NY.

I did it on my original Special tank. I used a DA sander and left some paint on for effect. Add stickers and some 2K clear and done.
I sold it on eBay when I upgraded to a 750 tank. I am still using the side covers which hot the same treatment.
The 2K clear really holds up well to fuel.

That looks nice Jim!

Here's a recent tank I've done. It's far from perfect but has a very unique look. I couldn't save the patina look. This tank had rust holes in the bottom. I've found personally that epoxys, resins, powder coating are the way to go. I wouldn't powder coat a motor (because of heat) and powder is sensitive to chemicals (brake, carb cleaner, etc). This tank looks better since I went over it with high gloss uv clear.

hey guys!
I did it!

so now.... I'm thinking of putting these old yanaha decals on the tank before clear coating.

1. how do I measure that? is there a factory template for position of logo?

2. is it a first base of clear, then the decals, then more clear? (il m rattle canning it)20190802_162137.jpg 20190802_162109.jpg

Good question. I think I’d stick em to the metal then clear it. As far as a template? Maybe the gurus have one. If not? Look at many pictures. You only get one shot. Looks good!

so i hit it with 2k and over sprayed the activator !!!

How did you do that?

well - first time clear coating anything tbh....

also - the 2k stuff is dual action - three base coats then three activator coats.
the base coats went on with ease

then the activator coat came out twice as thick.... also i had the tank hanging. maybe i should have had it flat?

im gonna restrip and resand....
