Jim's 1980 SG Miss September

Aunt Mildred says:

Now HalfMile - you know that the US Postal Service doesn’t make mistakes like that. You apologize to that nice Mailman this instant, young man!

The MP08 also has the secondary terminals (i.e. the big high voltage ones) aligned with the long axis of the coil which makes them far more convenient to mount than the "sideways" oriented coils sold by MikesXS.

Don't get me wrong - those work fine too in my experience, but they take up a lot more room under the tank than the Honda coil would.

I just ordered one to try out.

They won't suit everyone, but I've been using these ever since Pamco Pete recommended them in a post many years ago. The price is right, and I like the yellow and orange colors.
No link.

I use the standard NGK 5K ohm plug caps. I prefer the "F" type that connects to a plug's terminal stud. I think they grip better than the terminal nut type .....

For plug wires, for many years now I've been using the EMPI silicone wire kits made for VW Beetles. You get 5 wires in a kit, enough for 2 1/2 twins, lol. I use the solid metal wire core type, not the resistor wire type .....

Besides black, you can get the wires in red, yellow, or blue. I've used pretty much all red ones over the years because the bikes they went on were either red or black. The latest install on my black '83. I like that it adds a splash of color to the otherwise mostly black bike .....

The black protection sleeve on the plug wire is 1/2 of an original protection sleeve that came on the stock wires. Originally, they cover pretty much the entire length of the wire. You don't need all that, only some on the section that exits from beneath the tank, and besides, it would cover your nice colored wire.

The Accel caps are molded onto the wires, which is another reason I like them -- one less connection to go wrong. So, you get enough wires and caps for 4 XS650s -- pretty cheap.

Sorry, I fixed it. The caveat with the Accel wires is that they are non-resistor. According to Pamco Pete, it's not an issue with points, but if using electronic ignition you should use resistor plugs -- BPR7ES instead of BP7ES.

The one wrinkle with the Accel wires is that they are 8mm diameter and I know that 8mm wires will not fit the stock XS650 coils which are the screw-on with a ferrule type (I tried) and the terminals on the Honda MP08 coils like identical to ours - so I suspect they might not fit those either.

Hmmmm....

Hmmmm.... If you read the ad copy in my link, it says 7mm. I measured an actual wire that I have on hand, and it is 7mm. I looked at the box that the Accel wires come in -- it says 7mm, but it does mention that 8mm is also available. Maybe that's what you got -- Accel wires other than the 3009 part number that I specified.

I don't think those Accel plug caps are molded on, just pre-assembled for you. These are the wires I use. You used to be able to get them for like $10 to $15 a set but I see they've gone up some .....

But this is a "or best offer" auction. Offer them $16 or $18, maybe they'll bite. I originally started using these years ago on my Euro bikes. They have Bosch coils that take automotive style plug-in plug wires. These VW ones plugged right in. All I had to do was trim them to length and install NGK plug caps on them. When I got my first 650, installing these was part of the renovation. Here it is ready to be rolled out of the shed after it's refurb .....

Eventually, I updated the coils to first an Accel, then an Andrews. Both of these took the plug-in style plug wires so again, the VW ones plugged right in .....

Obviously, there are many good choices out there, these just happen to be mine. I've been using them on various bikes now for a good 20 years without any issues.

Ahhhh - hadn't picked that up. Good to know!
