TX650 engine parts work with XS650?

Hey guys,

I currently have an 82’ XS650 with the ol’ no spark problem. Any who, i have an opportunity to pick up a 73’ TX650 with extra parts and was wondering if anyone knows if the engine parts would work with mine? I have read that the frames were modified after the 73 TX but didn’t see anything about the engines. The only thing i can see is it having a points system. Since my TCI box is toast (i believe), I’m thinking of converting to points with the extra parts that this TX would come with (assuming they’re still there).

However, My other (main) issue is the 82 I currently own does not have a title. It’s only got about 3k miles on it and is in great condition. I really want to get this baby running and plate it. This TX comes with a title and was thinking i can register it and slap those plates onto mine. Or have fun tearing it down and really get balls deep into learning everything and swap the XS parts onto the TX. If possible.

I am in need of some guidance! Can anyone help a brother out?

Thanks!

Should be perfectly compatible, except for some minor changes over the years (Carbs, ignition, possibly clutch, rods, pistons and can sprocket). Not sure if the TX have the 256 rods, instead of the 447. Do a forum search on this.

73-74 is the great divide year from the 256 type motors to the 447. Interchanging parts between them requires deep study, there's several gotcha's. Read up on points into TCI motors, the later cam ID was not reamed to fit the advance shaft bushings.

Yeah...you’ll either have to use the TX engine or rebuild the ‘82 as the are some pretty fundamental differences between them (notably the number of teeth in the timing chain drive and the length of the connecting rods).

You really can’t mix things around too much without knowing what you are doing.

Uh Oh.. hmm My great spare 82 head may require machining if ever needed for my 78 ? That’s how this reads. The reaming may be hard to accurately position. o_O

IMHO, getting a legit title for the '82, and sorting out the ignition problems would be easier and cheaper than trying to adapt parts from the '73. Even if you did, putting the plates registered to the '73 on the '82, legally, it's misrepresentation, and you'd be in a pile of (expensive) trouble if Johnny Law checks the registration (of the '73) against the frame number of your '82. That's known around here as "Mickey Mouse" plates, or "running dirty". Good luck.

Are you interested in selling any parts off the 73 TX? I just purchased my first street bike. Grew up riding motocross. Any who I Saved a TX650 from rotting away in my sisters back yard. It needs some tlc!
Cheers

Thanks for all the input fellas! The guy I was going to get the TX from was a fail but after reading everyone’s comments and recommendations, I think I was better off not getting it lol! I am unsure of what to do with my 82’ right now.

Thank you all again!

Anyone have any idea how to obtain a title when you have no idea when/if it was ever registered? Any forums i can be redirected to? I’d love to make it a kick only bike but don’t want to up that kind of money for a bike i cant ride.

States vary in titling processes.
Oregon is very easy with lost titles if you are an Oregon resident.
However just across the Columbia River is WA state. Whole different game and not easy at all.
So difficult in fact I just gave an untitled frame back to an Oregon resident.
:devilish:
You best be handling the title first, before your hopes and wallet have invested in your lost title project.

It can be done in IL. Go to a DMV and they can explain what you need to do.

Do you have a bill of sale? That's a big help, some kind of receipt saying you paid somebody something for it, with (all the) important information, and didn't just "steal it". And if you do a "rubbing" of the VIN on the steering neck (blank piece of paper, and "rub" a pencil over it to make an impression), it'll show the DMV you actually, physically, have a motorcycle. Sorry for the simplistic details, I just don't know what you know...

No offense taken! If I knew (or thought I did) I wouldn’t be asking lol! I appreciate everyone’s advice and help! I do not have a bill of sale. I got it from a guy that got it from a guy that somehow had it and that’s as much as I know.

I’ve never heard of the “ rubbing” of the VIN but I’ll definitely do that as well when I go in.
