Signal Flasher, Indicator fault .Troubleshooting Flowchart

I had some problems curing a faulty flasher system on my 79 special last week.
It was raining all day today so I spent a few hours constructing a trouble-shoot flowchart which I thought might be useful to other owners if their flashers stop working at any time.

Please let me know if there are any errors or ommissions which I'll correct.
I'd like to thank xsLeo, 5twins,Twomany and others whose various posts have contributed to the flowchart

This post kinda links to another post that queries an apparent discrepancy between some of the online electrical schematics and the actual wiring on my 79 Special

Nice flowchart, peanut.

I'd like to add the part numbers and values of various flasher bulbs that members may inadvertently plug into the flasher bulb socket, and have difficulties with the flasher operation. Of the bulbs listed below, only the 1156 bulb has the proper current draw for the flasher relay, and is recommended for our stock flasher units.

12.8v, Single contact bayonet (BA15s Base)

67 - 0.6A, 8 Watts
89 - 0.6A, 8 Watts
93 - 1.0A, 13 Watts, 15 CP
1003 - 0.9A, 12 Watts, 15 CP
1073 - 1.8A, 23 Watts, 23 CP
1093 - 1.2A, 15 Watts, 15 CP
1141 - 1.4A, 18 Watts, 21 CP
1156 - 2.1A, 27 Watts, 32 CP <--(*Recommended*)

excellent Twomany thank you .
There is a real issue with folk switching to LED bulbs and altering the load on the relay. Previously, owners were advised to fit an additional resistive load to compensate Apparently the answer now is to fit an electronic relay which is not load dependant.

It would be very useful to have all this information in one short concise locked thread perhaps as a sticky ? there doesn't appear to be one for flashers at present.

bump !...
any chance of this getting put in the Tech section sometime;) ?

peanut questions of this nature should be directed directly to gggGary and or Travis.
For them to check every post in every thread would be too time consuming. Unlike me they have lives to attend to.

well excuse me!... ....well that told me didn't it :D

Damn dude there was nothing personal in that post. No attack, no criticism just an FYI if you want their attention it is sometimes better to go one on one.
Don't read between the lines when it is just white space.

wind ya neck in WER....... just having a joke is all . I thought your tone was a little formal like a telling off ,thats all :)
Thats why I put the smilies in to make that clear to everybody ;)

Its a good way of looking and solving a problem.

My only input would be to check the bulbs and bulb socket for a good connection at the "Flashers working" and having a "no" where you have a "yes". If this was a "no" after that then it can be routed back to the diagnosis. No need to check the charging system if the flashers are working.

Checking and cleaning switches, connections and earths could be included as a sentence that stated the importance of good connections and it is something that should be done regardless of, or before, a problem arrived.

It is a wast of time and money replacing relays and wires before checking if the bulb and socket are working properly.

I didn't see any attack from weekendrider, and 650Skull is correct with "no / yes, all in all it's an additional resource to repairs. Good work peanut, doesn't it rain all the time in Somerset? No wonder I live in the tropics....like Skull, it's our winter here and we are still in shorts, still can swim in the ocean....

thanks for the appreciation. I love flowcharts as they tell you precisely what to check in a sensible and logical sequence. They can save a lot of wasted time and money .

You've made some good points ! I'll amend the flow chart to include your suggestions. I suppose I assumed it extremely unlikely that all 4x bulbs would fail simultaneously.
Therfore If 1 or even 3 bulbs suddenly stopped working the other bulb/s would still show if the signal flasher system was working correctly.
The clean contacts etc sentence is an excellent suggestion

we are currently sweltering in a 35 degree heatwave ! Somerset is a County in the South West of England (down the bottom) so we have the highest incidence of sunshine and probably the lowest rainfall in the British Isles
We have two coastlines with loads of fabv beaches and few sharks BUT......... we don't have any decent surf. You have to go further South to Cornwall for the waves.;)

I like the flow chart, I'm stuck at change the relay, Anyone knows what relay fits and works best, tried cf13, not working, will try DOP-3x and LF1-S soon, will update.

“77 xs650, I bought them in eBay, they all say it fits but it didn’t so, ordered another one, and will order this one too, to try them both, thanks.

so just to confirm....you followed the flowchart and your signal lights are all lit solid yes ?......
