So I recently picked up a 75’ “project” and everything was looking good until I discovered this...

so my question is this.... based on the rust on the crank and all the debris should I continue to try and flush this stuff out? do I have to split the cases? Is the rust a deal breaker? Thanks for your input!

Bugs ! ? Lol are those bugs ? I don't see a whole lot of rust.
How many miles are on that engine? What do the jugs and rods up top and head look like ?
Maybe there is hope

Yup, bugs! Also there is mouse nest material that I am still trying to get out. miles are unknown unfortunately. The jugs are pretty rusty and so is the head so I was planning on getting a different top end, I was just hoping the bottom end was in better condition and that I don’t have to split the cases.

I see a couple ladybugs but mostly ants? Bizzarre!
Well if the trany's like that, yeah your going to want to get all that detritus out of there.

Gary, is the rust on the crank a concern or can I proceed with flushing out the bottom end? I was planning on using mineral spirits.

whats the rest of the bike look like? where'd you score it? I'm down in Long Island, a little ways from Syracuse, but I split my time down here and in the Catskills.

I wouldn’t count it out as being done. There are plenty of used engine parts on eBay or this forum if something is busted. Clean it out and see if it shifts through gears and has compression before tearing it completely apart. At least then you will have an idea the transmission isn’t ceased or you need a top end rebuild.

I think that’s a good call! Thanks for the vote of confidence I really want to bring this bike back to life!

Do you have the head off? The cam chain looks funky.

Once the motor is opened up, you have a whole new set of questions - how far do ya go?

IMHO I wouldn`t spring for a good 700 kit unless I split the cases first and really knew what I had. You won`t get a complete cleaning just by flushing the bottom end. Probably won`t even clean the crank bearings and from the pics the trans surely needs to be inspected. I`d say flushing the bottom end is just the tip of the iceburg. Just my thoughts. Good luck with your project and lots of good info here on this site.:twocents:

My recent acquisition was butt ugly on the outside and I removed the engine to check it out, I did split the cases after taking the top end off because, with the engine out and the top end off there's little to beyond time spent to lose but much to gain. Splitting the cases is not a scary thing, just go at it placing one foot before the other. There IS a massive amount of information and the answers to most any question you may have on this forum.

The thing about a rebuild is that if it’s not yours and you have no idea about previous ownership. You have assume the worst and hope for the best. Long story short. Get in there.
:agree: You already spent the money. You're committed. Don't go half way.

With the head off It's not hard to split the cases. Turn it upside down in a milk crate. Then you can lift the lower case up off the rest.
Then you can get a good look inside. From what I can see of the inside from here it don't look impossible.
Once the lower case is off you can lift out the crank and transmission. Clean them off, inspect the bearings. The book tells how to.
Once you get them clean a coat of oil can help prevent rust till you get things back together.
You can get complete engines for not a bad price, then you have to believe what the seller has to say.
I might even do that till you get this engine up to snuff.
