This is a '80 that a local 'indy' shop is selling. I haven't seen it, but I bet it doesn't come close to what your tins will be. He's been trying to sell it for months.

Yeah, I think he's a bit overpriced for what he has. Interesting scheme on the tank. Lookin' at it makes me wonder if I should fill in the badge mount and put a tuning fork there like Bob's 77D?
Opinions?

Of course it’s your project to do as you wish, ;)
You’ve gone to so much effort to mimic the look of the early gas tanks, IMHO if you could somehow continue that with the early oval badges it would complete the look. The downside is they’re stupid expensive and the mounts are different and also the early tanks have a recess for the badges to fit into. How do you suppose this guy fit them on his special tank?

Something else to consider is a YAMAHA decal applied to the paint and then cleared over. That’s the way my XS750 tank came from the factory.

There are a lot of decals of various sizes and colors on eBay

And I’ll leave you with one last idea , then I’ll stop writing all over your thread. :D
There is an online Do it yourself decal company that I’ve had numerous decals made by. They have an online interactive design software that’s fun to play with, make them any size, any color, with or without borders or shadows, hundreds of different fonts to choose from, they come pre cut as individual letters on an application sheet that’s very easy to apply.

I knocked this out in about 5 minutes. The yellow is just a background color I chose, not part of the decal.

Looks good Jim. The tank looks familiar?. I`ve got one I`ve been thinking about Knee notches and a center ridge like a Triumph or Trackmaster tank. Probably weld rod down the center and bondo it in. The 2K primers and sealers all but completely eliminate bleed through on white and light silvers etc but the old school trick was to use blue hardner in the bondo. This post makes me want to go out in the shop and create another mess to clean up. Easier to just watch you.

Yeah, that's my current "sticking point" with 'em.:yikes:

Hi Jim,
although I mostly agree with what the old Scotsman said about what colour to paint a boat:-
"Two choices, one's black, t'other's the colour fools use" Gawd, that's a beautiful paint job.
Here's my Heritage Special's tank:- See next post.

That is Doug Whitaker's Special! Side cover badges are painted on. Tank badges are from Mike's XS. The tank is stock Special. The bike is beautiful when up close and personal.

Jim, Your creativity shows in what you have already done on this tank, so you should go with your gut on this. Personally I think the oval stock badges will finish out the enhanced stock look you are going for, especially if you go with the candy gold that I voted for!

Yeah... saw that. Almost 50 bucks with shipping. Don't know why but that just rubs me wrong. At the end of the day, guess I'll just suck it up and go ahead and get 'em.
Anyway..... finished up the Bondo and shaping. Everything measures out within (my) limits. Put just a whiff of primer on the edges. That'll be my guide for rounding the edges off evenly.

Love what you're doing with the bondo, real '70s stuff.

Hard to say about the colors. I suppose if you intend to sell the tank and tins, one of the traditional colors would likely sell better.

If it was for *your* project, could be worth pursuing an alternative color scheme, but in keeping with the XS1 pattern. Coupla examples:

Now, something that would be groundbreaking, would be a combination with chrome, or tinted chrome. The Alsa chrome paints have come a long way...
