I just signed up, so I hope this post is okay. I didn't see anything in the rules, so here goes.
Last spring I bought a 1977 XS650 at an estate sale. I knew it was a cool bike I had always admired and it looked to be in great shape. The owner had bought it about 20 years ago in Boise as a collecters item and had stored it ever since. After a good cleaning, the bike is in almost mint original condition. Someone had preserved the tank with a coating, so there is no rust inside. The only rust I can find anywhere is a couple small spots on the handlebars. The engine had new oil in it. I took the carbs out and ultrasonic cleaned them and replaced the rubber diaphragms. I replaced all the fuel lines and the gas tank petcocks. Of course it needed a new battery and even though the tires were like new, I replaced them with new rubber. I replaced the rubber handlebar dampers, the battery box dampers, and the side cover dampers. I upgraded the front brake pads with Vesrah sintered metal pads. The bike has 8186 miles on it. EVERYTHING works. The motor starts instantly and runs great, quiet and tight, no smoke. It looks like it has never been down. All the chrome is excellent, no rust. Pipes are mint. Seat is perfect. There are a couple of very small scratches on top of the gas tank, which is otherwise perfect. All electrics work.
I thought I would keep it, but I am more of a dirt bike guy, so I have decided to sell it and get a dual sport bike instead.
What do you think a bike like this is worth? I have lots more hi-res pics if anyone wants to see more detail.
Thanks for your time and expertise.

Very Nice 77 !
West Coast prices are pretty reasonable still. I've bought and sold a couple further north in Oregon. Yours is a very fine and desirable example.
I've sold them for $2500, $2600
You better expect a little more even if you must wait on it until spring.

Put vintage insurance on it and ride it on sunny Sundays.
HaHa, that's what I did this summer, took it for a couple of mellow jaunts. I have always been a dirt bike guy and used to race, so I have had a hard time with throttle discipline when I get on a street bike. I thought this would be a nice bike for me since it is not crazy fast like the CBR1000R I last rode (OMG!!!). The bike is fun and I am tempted to keep it

The 77 is popular with those who know them. I have a friend near Seattle who had one. He sold it for over $3K. It may have been $3500 or more. It was a nice bike, but I was very surprised at what he was able to get for it. Location is a big factor.

yup 3 3.5 if you are willing to wait for the "right buyer" Sell it and you'll be regretting it.
Your reasoning is spot on, why I ride XS650's I have faster bikes but the XS are "just right" for fun and keeping your license.

In the Spring and here in the Denver area, your '77 would bring around 4K. Too get it here though would cost $400+ shipping, so you have to think about that. Ebay sounds good if you want to deal with it.

I haven't heard of a '77 XS650 bringing $5K in the US, so if it does, I certainly want to know about it. XS-1, XS-2, sure. I did see a no miles Special II go over $5K on eBay.

A good friend sold this '78 he resto-moded for $4300 a few years ago. It was gorgeous. I know it's not 5, but this is the Denver market. It was a '78 Special.

A custom is a crap shoot. It will bring money, or it won't. I'm talking straight up stock. :smoke:

Agree, in Portland OR, non stock XS's sell quickly for $2 thou. or less. Higher than $2500 and those bikes tend to stay posted a long time.
Though I'm done short selling my time invested rescue projects for cheap ($2600)
I've picked up two non running low mileage abandoned projects in the recent past for $1300 each.
That price was paid fingers crossed only because I can spot a "low risk" potentially successful bike.
I would have to be patient to try to sell for $3 thou in my area however.

Nothing less then $5000.oo There are buyers that will pay a premium price for unmolested.. stock.. standards. Toss it on eBay.. with a opening bid of $5000.oo. We just did a Xs2 (1972) restoration…. owner drop'd nearly ten large when all said and done. Keep it... sit it aside.. treat it for long term storage.. inside… it's a investment.
Sidebar: Klamath Falls, my home town... drove thru there about 3 yrs ago... downtown same. The week I moved away... headline news in the paper... " Klamath is getting it's 2nd MacDonald's ".
