- - - there are a couple of Triumph guys in my CVMG Chapter who would likely be mightily annoyed with me if I showed up with that style of logo on my bike. ;)
Pete

Hi Pete,
and how is that a bad thing, eh? They already envy you for having a bike that's not cursed by Lucas so put the boot in and grin.
Note that you can also get a Triumph-swoosh "Yamaha" tank decal big enough that it can be read from across the street.

Yeah....but I don't like antagonizing people.....much.

Besides, those poor buggers get enough of a twitting when I hit the button just before they start kicking. :lmao:

Indeed - it is right on for the side of an XS650 tank. I went to their website and it looks really good....
...except for the $45 shipping to Canada.

RAYMOND - could you please measure it and give us the length and height (width?) of the decal?

I'd guess that it is about 5" long and 2" high....

Pete

Pete, please see response to Jims posting - http://www.xs650.com/threads/hello-from-new-member.55057/page-36#post-624058

Offer to buy and post open to you of course . . .

Looks appetizing and love the Boston accent!

In Canada we have Tim Horton's and so the fight scene would likely have involved a double-double and swinging hockey sticks...

After much ponderin'.... the stick on XS1's get the nod. Our good friend Raymond across the pond is working with the manufacturer and Pete and myself to fab. us some XS1 badges in British Racing Green with silver trim. Here's a sneak peek...

The following comes from a PM I sent to Jim because I did not want to appear to contradict his experiences. Jim said it was fine to add my comments to the thread:

"So true about stripper giving a slimy mess. I do not use it anymore. I use those knotted wire wheels and they will strip a tank in less than an hour. But care is needed because knotted wheels can strip metal off as well. I didn't want to mention this as a comment in your thread because it would detract from your article.

Another bit I discovered is its best to leave the original paint under the petcock because it is usually way far superior to any petrol resistance the average DIY painter will obtain.

On the short tube part that the pet cap seals against I take the primer approximately an 1/8th the way up, the base coat half way up and the clear topcoat to the top. This avoids the petrol wicking through the primer/base coating and lifting them.

On my Virago earlier this year I used the ProXL 2K clear in a can over my base coat. It is easy to use with an excellent potlife ( i.e. easily 6 hours ), high pressure and an adjustable nozzle. In future I will just use a 2K base coat (Edit: Actually a 2K high Gloss colored coat) without a clear. Safety protection like full body suits and masks with organic vapour/NCO canisters are very cheap now so occasional use of NCO 2K coatings is quite feasible at home. I used my garage with the doors wide open on a still fine day and lived with the few dust specks and just polished them out a couple of days later."

Extra added today:

I wore one of those white 3M full body suits that are rated for occasional splash applications. It has an elasticated hood that fits nice and tight around the face. With a face mask on and organic vapour cartridges fitted, plus rubber gloves, barely any skin was exposed. Certainly a full face mask would be best at leaving no skin exposed.

A major issue with isocyanate based coatings is sensitization. Should you get sensitized to isocyanates then you may have a severe allergic reaction/asthma attack when ever you go near them in the future. This is a big issue because so many products now are based on isocyanate chemistry e.g. synthetic rubber used on shoe soles, those insulation spray foams and that expanding glue for wood. Also of relevance here is when mechanically stripping old 2K coatings the heat from friction can result in the release of low levels of isocyanate which can be an issue if you are sensitized. Perhaps the slimy mess of paint stripper is something to be tolerated afterall???

ProXL 2K clear coating has an excellent potlife. I sprayed it in the afternoon at approx. 20 Celsius. Overnight the temperature dropped to 14-16 Celsius. When I checked my clear coated tank the next day I saw a very small defect where I had accidentially touched it. I sanded it gently and sprayed some leftover coating into a tin and brush applied it to the damaged spot on the tank and it cured well and polished up nicely. I sprayed a panel that next day with some of the leftover in the can also and it showed excellent petrol resistance after 48 hours cure. The 500ml can of ProXL is sufficient for one tank and two sidecovers with three applications: Cost for 500ml is around £19.

I notice on Ebay UK that you can buy a high gloss 2K coating with hardener and thinner for approx. £45. I think that is pretty good value if you want a fairly simple/plain finish:

There are sure a lot of purty paint jobs out there. You guys really put your hearts into them. I'm currently working on an XS2. It was in great and complete condition except the P38 olive drab paint job so I decided to use creative liberty and do my own scheme. Used Auto66 base coat spray cans and topped it with SprayMax mat urethane clear coat. I couldn't resist the red because of its name- Spectral Racing Red Chroma Flair, a Land Rover color plus GM Charcoal and Alaska white stripes. Can't decide on badges or not. This is not my first rodeo using this paint and it works great without any equipment. Anyone can apply it easily. The desert is in the prep.
