Hi guys,

Ive been reading through all the threads on charging systems as I’ve got an issue with no head light when engine running and no volt change on my 1982 xs.
Sorry to bring up and start another thread about it but I’m a bit stuck.

I’ll give you a list of the things I’ve gone through and tried and if I've done something incorrect I’d appreciate your input to put me right.

so.....

The bike starts and runs, she runs well.
The battery is holding a charge but not increasing when running.
Headlight isn’t lighting up, nor the instruments.
I’ve had all my reg/rec cables out, cleaned the contacts and replaced some connectors.
New brushes (no difference as the old ones)
Checked all my grounds.
Slap test, I have to hold the gauge so close to the nut for it to stick, doesn’t seem to change ignition on or off...how strong should it be? 3/4 inch distance?
Ohms for the rotor are 5.4
12.4v going to the brown wire brush connection.

To bypass the reg and jump the green wire does the bike have to be running?

Anything else I’m missing?

Thanks in advance!

Yes. Rev it to about 3K revs. short green brush to ground and look for an increase at the battery. Don't leave it grounded any longer than needed to read the meter. Helps to have 3 hands here....
As far as the slap test, scroll down this comment, I put a video in there on what to look for.

Thanks for your reply! I’ll have a look and try this tomorrow when I’ve got an extra set of hands :)
