I've offered to assist my riding buddy Gary with the restoration of his brother-in-law's 1981 XS1100SF which has been sitting for a number of years.

He's got the Clymer manual , and he's now got my related knowledge of the XS650.

He's asked me for a referral as to the best forums on the XS1100, so I'm asking for your knowledge/experience base of the most informative and responsive ones.

Thanks ahead of time.

There are always quite a few XS1100s at the annual Vintage Yamaha Rally at the Iron Horse in Sept. and I have heard from the those folks that there are several pretty good sources for parts.

In fact...I am pretty sure that MikesXS carries parts for the 1100....:yikes:

The reason there is a Vintage Yamaha rally at all is because of the XS1100 and the folks at xs11.com who have been doing this rally since 2003 long before the XS650s were included..it was primarily an XS1100 event..over the years it has been expanded to include all Vintage Yamahas

An XS1100SF is a 1979 Special model...the designations were 1978E '79F '80G and '81 was H..in 1982 the XS1100 became the XJ1100..same bike just updated electronices and a computer... The Special models had an S preceding the model year designation..so a 1979XS1100F is the Standrd model and a '79XS1100SF is the Special.
So if it is truly an '81 then it would be an XS1100SH..also noted that in 1981 there was no standard model instead there was the 1981 XS1100H which was the Venturer..Yamahas answer to Honda's Goldwing ..this bike came witha vetter tour package...from the factory...

I'll pass this info on to my friend.
He said the frame/engine # is 4RO-004141

The pictured motorcycle is a 1979 XS1100SF. In my opinion, it's the prettiest of the Specials. Yamaha has removed the XS1100SF parts catalog from its site. None of the vendors have it anymore, either. I may have it copied someplace. There are quite a few differences between it and the SG and SH. Ignition, carburetors, cylinder heads, side covers, seat, all different.
XS11.com is of little to no help right now. You can't join it. Maybe it will come back in a month. Most of the real knowledge base is no longer active. There is good stuff in the archives if you can find it. There was a contributor with handle Crazy Steve. He put a lot of good stuff on there. BA80 knows them as well or better than anyone. He's still active.
There are XS1100 FB groups. There is a lot of bad info shared every day. It makes it very hard for someone new to the bike. Common with XS650? Only the general appearance and a few parts.
Best parts source is XJ4ever.com. Also partzilla.com, MikesXS.net, cruzinimage.net, sumorubber.com At Mikes XS, you have to know what you're looking for as they don't know enough about the bike to know what they have.

And then, there's me. I have some XS1100 knowledge. Happy to share.

XS1100SH has a one year only ignition/TCI. Post a pic and we can positively ID the bike. At least the fiche still exists for the '81 Special.

Thanks Marty!
The photo I have isnt very good. I'll get another.
The owner actually has two, one is a parts bike which he crashed years ago.

'Dude, sounds like with all the help from this site, your buddy is gonna be chasing you (running circles around you? :wink2: ) on that Xs1100 in no time!
That depends upon how crooked the road is. The XS1100 is capable, but it's a hand full. The XS650 is pretty nimble and has plenty of grunt.
