What have you done to your XS today?

Finished the scales and Sun. I'm thinking that's all I'll do until I get the right engraver. I think its a pneumatic hammer engraving machine. or something like that haha. Did my best with just 2 bits lol Do I fill in the scales with some flat black paint? or leave it shiny?
I think this is actually what the guy was using to do the leather work, but I think it would work for engraving too, he had made one tip that he could change for different patterns,,, these are normally used for knocking slag off welds when using flux core, its the only thing I can find that even looks like the tool he showed me, but I would think something air powered and industrial would work for the mass of the work, and the dtail with other finer tools

recycle bill those are actually the bottom mounts fro the seat springs, and the seat pan has holes all around the edge for looks, and it just so happened\s the holes line up with the bolts that are part of the frame... ..I actually rode 1400 miles at once shot to the redwoods run in CA... with a seat like that, it ended up with all kinds of padding duct taped to it for the ridde home lol,,, im hard core just not that hard..

Speaking of calipers, I spent 2 hours trying to assemble the caliper and pads on the '81 XS650 Special.
Is there some trick to this. I have done lots of brakes without a problem but this one has me stumped.
Got the seals in but the pads are not going in. These pads were in that caliper when I took it off the bike.
Is there a special tool for this??? I should have had this thing running by now.

pics? Caliper/pad assembly is straightforward, no special tools needed.

Make sure you've squeezed the piston way in, and removed the left-hand side securing screw.
The pads push up against the spring metal clip at the top.

My caliper is much different than the one in the video. The 2 parts of the caliper have to be assembled and the pads fitted into guides in the U shaped part and maybe secured by a screw.I think I had it right but it all fell apart. Seems like some kind of clip could be helpful to hold the pads in place until the unit is mounted of the bike.

Found another design flaw, a bit too involved to fix, so it's been shelved. I've used up this month's allotment of web data, so will have to post details about it next month.

In the meantime, been super-preoccupied with the new toy.

Try installing the bracket on the fork leg the pads on the bracket THEN push the caliper into place.
Note exactly how that stainless clip is positioned. it will go in backward.
