Local sourcing again was fun but I gotta admit , the 150 mile round trip up the Interstate of truck (BIG RIGS) traffic in a full on west coast rain & wind storm at night was frightening! very crowded and fast traffic..
The seat looks the right shape for this bike and will be custom mounted very firmly somehow soon. It's just a little shorter than I imagined but hey , it's the first one of these to me. Its gonna be good

Nice! Looks good! I believe my back hoop had been shortened by 2 or so inches because it hugged the seat a bit closer. Pretty easy to do if that gap bothers you. Glad you made it home safe! Stormy nightime i5 trips can be quite sketchy sometimes! Haha
 
Think I'll leave the hoop out there for the fender mount. There will be some chrome fender space back there to shine nicely.

Yes , Interstate I-5 up to Seattle is a fast & busy one. That rain & wind & water had my Ford shorty skipping like a flat rock

The front end mock up of the handlebars and controls went well last week. Progress there too is more tumbling of aluminum parts, levers, triple clamp. The gauges have now been check for light bulb condition and more hardware hi grades there too.
Using these "Special" style dished bushing washers will help squeeze the rubber bushings. A stock flat washer underneath is inferior to the custom fit here.
I'm quite sure the handlebars will feel firm using this mount style.
And, a light fresh sticky coat of Yamabond all over the bushings will help em stay firm.

So cupped washers help the XS handlebar bushing slop problem?
What years had the cupped washers?
Can be used on earlier models to improve?
Searched EBAY, found none.

The "cupped shape" washers are found on later Specials. They are the top washers. The thru hole diameter is big to slide up the bar riser shank. When using these cupped washers also on the bottom , which surrounds and squeezes the bottom rubber mount bushing edges better , an additional thin small washer under the nut which has an appropriate thru diameter for the thread major diameter is useful. That will tell you just how tight to squeeze those bushings both top and bottom together.. Clean and dry. No grease there. Perhaps sticky YamaBond even.
These bars are Very tight and firm! Which is necessary for any aggressive riding

Look under here at where this thin washer was added under the nut and lock washer.

That washer is tight on the thread major and will not slide further up the mount shank which is bigger in diameter. If you "feel" when that washer contacts, that is where you stop tightening. The spring clip will now fit the cross hole too ;)
 
The washer really doesn't tell you anything. Basically, you just tighten up the nut until it runs out of threads. If the bar mounts are still loose, some shim washers can be added on top or between the two rubber cups .....

Diagram example shows flat washers. Items 20 & 22 the lower washers (22) do have a smaller thru hole which I believe bottoms or stops ?
If you use top washers , tho the cupped variety , both top and bottom , the bottom washer will tighten as far as you like compressing the rubber. Utilizing the cupped shaped washers better contains and squeezes the rubber dampers and my added washer felt like it bottomed as the dampers were squeezed. ?
Gave a good location to stop anyways..
 
The bottom washers won't go as far as you like, only until the threads on the stud run out.
 
I don't have even one parts fische or schematic. I just find what really works well and looks great by hands on trial and error

I completely understand now the premise and purpose of the small washer, it's a limiter of some sort.
Are these washers available in any other form, non Yamaha and readily available?
Probably not since the lower washer requires that recessed area to sit around the fork tube

That's it. See the cup shaped now bottom washer which will slide fit over the shank diameter squishes the rubber damper that one thick washer thickness more than stock. The dampers are now more rigidly held compressed just that much more. Big difference in feel
