Might help get some suggestions if you gave a hint at where you are located!

Suggest you look at age-related registration on DVLA? I've never done this and don't know the ins and outs but it is sure to depend on what you do have.

Could start here: http://www.autocycle.org.uk/age-related.pdf

My bike is a 1978 import, possibly from Canada, and it has been given an age-related registration number but that was before my ownership. If anything, might be easier with a European bike but I don't think DVLA is all that bothered about the details of Europe vs US models. They are very likely to want proof that you bought or otherwise own the bike.

It's a bit ironic, because usually we hear our American cousins tales of woe around establishing title on a bike.

By the way - I'm not far away and used to live in Fife.

Hi Alan and welcome,
my only experience registering an orphan bike in the UK was back in 1957.
I'd rebuilt a 1937 Velocette from salvaged parts I'd scrounged up here and there.
The registration people ( dunno if they were DVLA back then) were able to use the bike's
frame number to find it's original registration and ask me if I wanted it or a new one.
It's likely that today's DVLA could do the same for your bike.
They'll also know if it's been stolen, so best you take your bill of sale.

Quite easy Alan, get in touch with the vintage yamaha club(vymc)
Send some clear photos of the bike with chassis number and engine number ,
Costs around £38 last time
Get it mot'd on the chassis number and insured send it all off to deal and you should get an age related plate.
Cant remember the exact dvla forms you need but it's all their website.

I'm planning on a restore so bike no where near ready for an mot but would like it registered before I start to spend money on it don't want a Q plate

I have found that getting an old bike without paper work make it just a parts bike. If I want to put it on the road I don't buy without paper work.
If the seller tells me it's easy to get registered I tell them You get it done and I'll pay for it. Most won't agree to that.

That was one of the reasons I got rid of the two XS400's I had. One I had all good paper for and even rode it a bit on my plates. The other I knew exactly who had licensed it last but just could not make contact with that guy and even had close friends who were related to his ex-wife and they could not find his contacts. As I had more projects than time I decided to sell the pair to someone else figuring he could use the one for parts as he had a few XS400's of his own.

One thing that gets me sometimes is in NY the statute of limitations for many Felonies is 6 years for crimes punishable by 8 or more years in prison; 3 years for lesser felonies.

So you could commit some felony and in 3 years not have to worry about being arrested for it. But if you try to register an old motorcycle that has been sitting in a barn somewhere for that long you almost need to hire a lawyer to get a licence plate for it so you can ride it on the road legal!

Why can't they just say that if you pay maybe $50.00 fee to do a stolen vehicle search on the VIN and if nothing shows up after a six month waiting period give you a clear title for it?

I really need to give it a try to get a title in my name for the 1978 XS650 I have in the garage. I do have the signed title from the last guy who licensed it but no bill of sale. Problem is he passed away around a year ago so that would be a problem. Probably just make up the bill of sale and forge a signature to it and hit the DMV someday.

Don't think you can get reg plates without mot,my xs came from USA before nova started, so had to prove all duties had been paid, that took a while.
