Anyone ever put a "ram air" intake on their 650?

I was thinking it might be cool to fabricate a ram air system. I was thinking that you would need 2 180 degree elbows that came off the carbs. They would need to attach to some sort of funnel to catch the air.

I was thinking it would look like the V-Max's airbox.

Anyone ever tried anything like that or have any ideas?

hi guys ...i thought the guy that makes the manifolds up also showed a set up for ram air using direct pull carbys regards oldbiker

How about this? Don't know if it works, but it looks cool.

Wise guys choppers are making several different styles of intakes. They have a couple ram air styles.

i did noyice that wise guys had a ram set up using direct pull carbys ... you may have too look at his site to see them regards oldbiker

here is one of ardcore's bikes with ram, but I belive it had problems with anything other than wide open throttle, do to low velocity not being able to pull fuel threw the long tube. this is the only picture ive seen of it with this intake. He's a member here, so maybe he will clarify.

Gotcha. I think it would be cool to keep the carbs in the stock place and just have a big funnel directing air into them ala vmax. I will probably try making a mold out of fiberglass.

One of the problems would be with water. Anyone have any ideas about keeping water out of the carbs?

Well it's a pipe dream of mine to try exactly what you describing, a ram air on an Xs 650, here's what I got so far, mandrel bent 1.5" dia stainless tubing hand cut 304ss flanges. Equal length runners +-. 3/4" carburetor is a 41mm fcr carb jetted to xs650r specs for initial setup. And a k&n cone filter to seal her up. I am picking up the throttle assembly and cables here shortly

Oh nice for a minute I thought it was a turbo set up but then realized I was looking at the rear of the header.

At realistic speeds for any XS, it will give very little in terms of hp increase. Dynamic pressure relies on the square of speed, so high speeds are needed for any significant effect. But will more than likely upset the carburetion a bit.
At least on the original V-Max 1200, the "air scoops" were purely decorative, and had no function whatsover.
On modern, fuel injected sportbikes with top speeds over 150 mph and carefully designed air ducts, "ram air" definitely has some merit. Here is a good article touching on the subject of ram air:

I 100% agree,
I just wanted a fcr41 carb and a equal length intake with it forward facing sooooo maybe it's not ram air as per scientific explanation but... the title/topic got ya here for us to ramble on about an old chunk of Japanese iron lol half the mission is accomplished.... make some people scratch their heads and go wtf is that all about ?

FCR are great carbs, I have a pair if 39mm on my Ducati 680.
But I suspect a single 41mm may well be too big for an XS. Only one cylinder is "pulling" at a time, so a single carb really don't need to be any larger than dual carbs. Most agree that dual VM34 is a good street setup, and 2×VM38 is as large as you want to go, even on a 750. Since flatslide carbs, like TM/RS and F CR flow better than VM and stock CV carbs, I'd go with something in the 33-37 mm range.
