What is the black plastic rectangle in the middle of some speedos? How do you test it? If you put 12 volts to it, you destroy it.
Thank you, I think you're right. If that's what it is, how does it cancel the turn signal? And why in the world is it in the speedometer?
I'm not sure how it works, somehow senses distance traveled I think. But that being said, on the several bikes I've had with it, it doesn't work very well. It's very inconsistent, sometimes functioning as it should, sometimes canceling the signal seemingly too early, lots of times not canceling it at all. Thankfully the signals also have that "push to cancel" feature on the button. I use that most of the time because, well, I have to, lol. The signal doesn't cancel on it's own.
If it worked by sensing distance traveled, that sure would explain why it's in the speedo housing.

When you put it like that, it does sound pretty dumb, doesn't it. I guess it's repeated forgetting the last time I ruined one. You test the gauge lights, then you just naturally move on to the next pin in the connector. I promise not to do that any more.
It's a reed switch triggered by a magnet in the speedo. To test it put a ohm meter on it and turn the speedo cable. As the magnet passes the switch it should alternate between shorted and open.

As I remember - and this is a very dusty neuron - A timer is involved above a certain speed. Below a set speed (including stopped) they would cancel based on distance. Above the speed setting (freeway speeds) they would cancel based on time (maybe 20 sec?). I don't remember the specifics. Not enough to bet on anyway.
