Starter solenoid rebuild.

Yes, rebuilding a solenoid. Why you ask? Because I thought it came apart and broke a wire...

Now I forget how it goes back together mechanically, and would like help understanding how this thing is supposed to operate.

Put up some pics of everything (closeups) and we'll figure it out.
 
I know how a solenoid works in theory, but I tried triggering it off my battery, and I got nothing. Perhaps I did something wrong...

I'm also assuming there's a length of wiring that needs to go in the hole that has none. They pull up through the solder joint holes and get trmed short, then soldered shut with the wires and connectors on them as well...I'm lost here as to why it didn't work when I mocked it up. It only goes together one way. The studs act as retainers for the solenoid piston plate (or whatever it's really called)

I'm guessing this is how it works at least...

I used a torch and solder with flux, packed the hole with a small amount of solder, and pressed the wire down in, heated the wire up with the torch til it meltedt the solder. I felt it solidify and cool, it was connected on both sides. I pulled the wires up through the holes and fastened it all back together, and it didn't work when I hooked it up to the battery. 11.44 volts dc from batt. Is there a special way to make it actuate???

Ohm across the two wires and tell us what the resistance is. Ohm both wires to ground (the case) and let us know that too.
