WJL AKA Wrenchjohns Legacy 70 XS1 in gggGary's hands

JFSNG......Huh? :umm:

I remember my first old Bonneville,
Kick start only.....ticklers on the carbs instead of a choke. The first few times I tried to start that bike, I kicked and kicked and cussed until I wore myself out. BUT THEN , when you finally learn what the bike wants you to do,
It’s like you’ve learned a secret handshake. It becomes so satisfying to go through the ritual and have that old bike fire right off for you.
I think I’m having almost as much fun as you , watching the two of you get aquatinted. Thanks for including us!

:laugh2:
Reflex carb on the bench, valves are set (intake was tight)
lots of clogged up jet type stuff. can't wait to get it back together so I can tear up the lawn .:sneaky:

Nice present in the mail today; a factory XS1 service manual. It's XS1 only not even the XS1B is covered.

Thanks WrenchJohns!

Rode the reflex around the pasture, incredible feats of trials riding derring do! (old man version LOL)
Caviat a few horse turds were crushed during this adventure. Horses had a great time pretending they were scared and running around.

Rode it a couple times and with a wet weekend decided to do some work.
Was it bit of oil under it yesterday morning so chasing leaks.
New clutch push rod bushing and seal, doing shift shaft seal, waiting for an engine seal set.
Did some cleaning today.

I'm no mailman, but it's cleaning up "pretty good"
Pictures lie! :lmao:

Looking good gggGary!

You're inspiring me to go out and polish up the fleet, get some fresh gas in em and go put some miles on them.

They've been sitting far too long due to other hobbies and projects taking up my interests and time.

Time to show them some love!

Seals came in, shift seal replaced. Removed and cleaned spacer on countershaft, did not replace that seal. There was an extra washer/shim betwixt sprocket and spacer did not put it back. Parts fiches don't show it? Long as the chain was off, decided I had to do the swing arm bushings. Spent about 45 minutes with drifts and the 12 pound maul. getting the pivot bolt out. Beat it out a little, clean, lube, beat it back in, repeat. Had Allison on the LH side with a 17mm wrench rotating the pivot bolt to help free it on the way out. Driving the 3 piece collars/spacer tube out of the swing arm bushings wasn't as bad, only 15 minutes and they were out. Cleaned up the pivot shaft, spinning in the lathe with 400 grit and mineral spirits.
Someone asked recently; the XS1 swing arm with phenolic bushings and paint weighs 6lb 12oz.
bushing bore, degreased, not cleaned up

Other side sandpapered and lightly filed to remove rust and some nasty marks, from a previous rehab?

new bronze, old phenolic, and needle type bushings
bushing removal tool ( done, dunno, a dozen sets so far? these came out with no problems really, they were are reusable but will be replacing them with bronze or the needle type??
pivot bolt and axle cleaned up. The early type 3 piece race/spacer is still sitting in the rust away bath.will either reuse or replace with a later one piece style.

Back of the bike. To sooth Skull I cleaned the lift.

One brake shoe was delaminating. Will replace with a good used shoe, degrease drum, and do a bit of sharpening stone clean up of drum face.

I’ve seen enough of these type of posts regarding having to beat that swing arm pivot bolt out with a
sledgehammer , that I’m still amazed that I was able to just slide my rust free, well oiled bolt out with just my finger tips on my XS2. You could’ve knocked me over with a feather, I was expecting a real battle!
