Edit.....Added this article to remind us, we have to rely on ourselves to navigate life, people and the media.

I'm not going to get into debates or arguments. ...............It is up to individuals what they want to believe, but i am going to post information that is factually based and pear reviewed. Where there is some speculation surrounding a hypothesis this will be mentioned a well although some speculation will be based on past historical accounts that would be relevant to existing situations..........

It has been mentioned, (by another member), we are in the midst of the 6th mass extinction so i thought i would start this thread to generate some conversation surrounding this topic. This also leads to our decisions that affect/cause this extinction and of course our disregard for the environment that has lead us to this point in time.

At times my posts may seem to be focusing on one area or one country. The intention is not to be polarizing, but to make an awareness of what is going on...........

From Plastic dumping in other countries to dumping tons of soil on the great barrier reef to new coal mines.

Micro Plastics......
Wikpedia..........
Clothing
Studies have shown that many synthetic fibers, such as polyester, nylon, acrylics, and spandex, can be shed from clothing and persist in the environment.[46][47] Each garment in a load of laundry can shed more than 1,900 fibers of microplastics, with fleeces releasing the highest percentage of fibers, over 170% more than other garments.[48][39] For an average wash load of 6 kg, over 700,000 fibres could be released per wash.[49]

Change is the only constant with climate. I fully concur in that principle. I do question how significant man's contribution to it is and believe that efforts to try to stop change should instead be directed to coping with the change.
It goes without saying that mankind should not be actively despoiling our environment, thinking of plastic waste in particular.
Let's also explore the unintended consequences like the clear cutting of the South's forests so Britain can boast of bio fuel wood pellet generated electricity.

Hasn't Paul Erlich been beating that same drum since the 70's? Weren't we all supposed to be dead already?

True.......... George Orwells 1984 is now happening and it is now 2020, 36 years after his prediction.......frighteningly close in the States right now

Interestingly i was reading how the bush fires in Aus last year killed 440 people, (side affect from smoke and particles causing deaths in people with existing health problems), and affected 80% of the population..........Covid19 has killed 100 people and 7219 recorded cases..........We don't hear about that since the virus has taken the front page

Haven't head about this.......

I guess i do tend to see the future as a glass half full...........then i read a golden nugget on a successful new experiment that can solve a major environmental problem........problem is it needs massive amounts of money and takes 10 years for it to be able to used on a large enough scale to be effective.
Small Example

No disrespect Skull but if nothing had been done and Covid 19 had infected 80% of the population I think the numbers would be far different.

None taken.......

Totally different type of disasters..........One point here, is that while Aus was burning, our chief went on holiday and when questioned the gov't wouldn't confirm or deny if he was or not, or if some one was in charge, if he was away..........at lest he made some good choices surrounding the virus..

The gov't and states, had been warned by many experts that the fire was not an if,... but when.......if they had been proactive then some of the super cells may not have developed, and like with the virus, it would not have been so destructive...........

Climate change and the fires........??

we are all doomed .. the tipping point is long past ...the population growth is the major prob and all the others ie pollution etc stem from it .. its not if but when ... WE ARE DOOMED or at least our decendents are ,as next couple of generations should be ok but after that humans are stuffed .. my bets are on the cockrochs to inherit the earth next

Skull if you want to respond to my prior post please do. Everyone else please refrain. I should not have posted what I did. Skulls thread is about pollution. Gary has a thread about Covid 19.

No, no, its a conversation and sometimes these things do overlap in ways we often don't realize...........There is talk that due to climate change, deforestation, and urban encroachment impacting on wildlife areas, this is a contributing factor to out-brake of the sars viruses............permafrost melting, again global warming, is exposing pathogens we don't know about...........we have know about Sars viruses for years now with no vaccines so what would the impact of a pathogen that had been dormant for 100,000's of years do to us.........common cold and chicken pox decimated first nation populations by 80% to 90% in some places so what chance would we have.........

Como'n and XS650's you gotta say the whole sentence.............;)

I do agree .......as i said, i have the half glass full mentality..........I still think we need to talk and research and learn... and... we shouldn't let ourselves get de-sensitized to what is going on around us........If we do the Gov't's controlled by the multinationals win

agreed , im the same with the 1/2 full mentality but also look at the reality , havnt got the figures handy but the way the pop is doubling quicker and quicker its a matter of not if but when and any fixs will only be band aid ones putting off the future as resources ie water and food not to mention minerals run out or run low .. if the population nums arnt dealt with and / or reduced none of it will matter .. but in the mean time quite happy with the era we are in just glad not born a 100 yrs later

It's funny how the solutions are always the same: Global cooling - cede more power and wealth to a central government. Global warming - cede more power and wealth to a central government. Pandemic - cede more power and wealth to a central government. etc., etc. etc. And I'll point out that I'm expected to give up my SUV and airline travel but our betters will continue to travel on private jets and own a fleet of SUVs. Not 1984 but Animal Farm is more apropos.
They can all F right off.

I recycle soda and beer cans and other metals. I do not cruise the streets looking for every scrap but, I do collect cans mostly. I do it to feed my hamburger habit. I compost kitchen waste veggies and lawn cuttings. My truck is a Ford Ranger with the smaller 3.0 engine. If I can use the SG for any errands, I do so. I also recycle paper products (mail usually), cardboard and glass and plastics including shopping bags.

depending on what you mean by the environment, it might be pretty late in the game...

Yes, and under forty foot of water with no fossil fuels left.

The history of miserablism is long and well established as a philosophy. https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Great-Horse-Manure-Crisis-of-1894/ It comes about, in part, because it imagines history as just long series of dates and facts.

Environmentalism has nothing to do with science it merely marshals science on each side in order to bolster its case (scientism). It is now completely politicised and politics is determined by philosophical underpinnings. The philosophy underlying environmentalism is Romanticism (a reaction against The Enlightenment) and anti-humanism (or deep pessimism). So, what you believe about climate change is not determined by science but by your politics and your place in society (where you are in the new classes which are emerging).

For myself, I care about the environment. But I care about it because my philosophy is Enlightenment-based and humanist. We need a safe clean environment for "human flourishing". I put human beings at the centre, not animals, and not an inanimate object (the Planet).

I care about animals and their place in the world for the same reason. I am against animal cruelty not because I privilege animals over human beings (as environmentalists do) but because I place human beings at the centre and cruelty and misuse of animals demeans us as human beings.

This to me is not semantics. Environmentalism leads to bad outcomes.

But the vast majority of people do not understand what is going on and are largely bemused by the heat which they see in the debates. They are kept out of the debate by "the science" which is interpreted for them by a "clerisy". There are many examples of this in history, not least of which are the struggles between high and low churches. Similar politicization of science occurred under Stalin, (Lamarkism) and under the Nazis (eugenics).

I taught at a college for 12 years and found that the attitude of young people (18 to 22 year olds ) was of complete indifference to the subject. They were as mystified by my inquiries over their attitudes to climate and the environment as they would be had I inquired about their attitudes to folk dancing. Young children though, at least in the UK, are being propagandized and marshaled to the cause. This is one of the more worrying developments.
