First off, I am Android and PC owner (Samsung all), so I suppose in the minds of some folks I am already doing it the hard way.
My phone is getting a bit slow and my laptop says there is not enough space to download the new upgrade, which I hear may be a mixed blessing.
Still using Picassa for the laptop, and whatever the Galaxy 5 came with. I have a couple old external hard drives with lots of space, but they would require set up I guess while these photo thumb drives are advertised as fool proof and eliminates duplicates, but none of them delete the pics from the source device.
Thinking about replacing Picassa with the Google Photos app but that entails cloud storage and potentially a fee that a Photo Stick would not.
Anybody faced this question and what did you do about it?

Relatively new Android phone. LG K50. Have internet on phone only these days. ...............I tether to my laptop using a USB cable, (no apps), use a short cut icon on my desktop to access the phone and drag photos or copy and past, either way, from phone to laptop/external hard-drive, and vise versa............. I do not use cloud services but have backup hard-drives...................Usually i drag and drop, or copy and past, and then delete manually what ever i don't want left where ever........

Went through my phone, and laptop, and removed all apps that i would not use or if they couldn't be removed i made sure they were turned off, especially the ones that are automatically on when the phone is first turned on, (that's if they aren't critical).

When i first got the phone every time i went to do something i was asked if i wanted to allow this or that app to access my information or link to photos or whatever.......Every time i would click the not now or not allow.............made sure that only an app that was absolutely necessary for what i use it for was accessed. This stops apps from using power and internet time and also stops them from tracking and directing information based on my usage.......in other words F**k off.

As you mentioned lakeview phones get clogged up from apps that stop upgrades and the phones are only good for few years before they become slow causing them to be obsolete...........I'm hope that by doing what i have the phone won't get clogged up and will last longer..........

edit: does the below help? i don't understand for sure what you need

think about this -- get on ebay and get a usb 3.0 to hard drive adapter cable. make sure it's the right socket on the hard drive side. you'll just plug it into your laptop and in effect you've turned the your hard drive into a giant flash drive. in windows, a new drive with a different letter. same as if it was inside your computer. copy (or cut) your pictures, and then paste them onto the new
