What have you done to your XS today?

It’s too hot to ride, and being cooped up in the house is driving me crazy. So, I went out to my garage, turned on a great big fan to blow on me, and cranked up some classic rock music and just started obsessively cleaning my ‘77.
I spent five straight hours on it and I’m not even done. I’m cleaning it as if I were going to show it. :laugh2:
What the heck, I enjoy doing it and it passes the time, plus I’ve enjoyed listening to some old rock albums from the 70’s I haven’t heard in a long time! Now.....where did I put that blue magic?

pics ! We want to see that 77 again lol

Ok Randy, here you go! Two days of degreasing , cleaning, scrubbing and waxing. Probably hasn’t been this clean since I first put it back on the road.

Took the SG put for an early run. 0800 and already 90*F. Just went on base and ran around "the Boneyard" to visit the XC-99. Basically, a cargo version of the B-36. She (the SG) wasn't running her best again. Ever since the top end rebuild she's been running rich. Been raising and lowering the needle and no sweet spot. I guess it's time to dig out the leaner main jets. Hopefully I can find the sweet spot then.

Hi everyone! New member here. New bike as well. It's my first bike. I fell in love with these bikes a few years ago. A week after I bought it, the bike started missing on the right cylinder. Initially assumed it was a spark plug then changed those made it a half a mile and same issue. So today I ordered a new coil off ebay and got everything ready to go. I'm not mechanical savy so any advice is appreciated

If it has the stock coils, it may be that the high tension lead isn't well connected either at the coil end or at the spark plug end - so you might want to take a look at the connections between the coils and the high tension (HT or high voltage) leads and the between the high tension leads and the spark plug caps.

If any of those HT connections are poor, the bike will miss, particularly at higher RPMs.

If you examine the connections, you will find what looks like a big wood screw down inside the coil or plug cap connection point. You must ensure that the HT lead has a bit of bare conductor exposed and then you simply twist that lead down onto the “screw” while firmly pressing it in. Once you have "screwed" the spark plug wire in - do the following:
  • secure the connection with the little rubber sleeve and screw-on the plastic nut (on the coil end) and,
  • slide the flexible rubber “boot” on the plug cap end down over the connection.
A little dab of dielectric grease in each connection will help keep water out of the connections.

Just a thought.....

Cool bike real nice! These bikes are best to have as a second bike and not a first. But yet again, my 77 was my first and made out ok with it. Take a look at the tech section and start reading. These bikes need care and love to get them running good. Ask questions a plenty lots of great people on here ready to help. JC

Bob, I have to say your collection of both your 72 and 77 is something to be proud of. They are both show bikes in my mind and do represent the hard work you have shown us you have done. Hats off to you fellow member!:bow2: love seeing those detail pics you have. JC

Thanks JC! I appreciate that. :)
