There is a frame behind the bags. It's made from 1/4" round stock steel. They are bolted to the front shock mounts and again behind and below the rear turn signals at the fender mount. So, no, the bags don't rub the shocks.
From a road star, cut and modified like gggGary tends to do. :p

I've been very happy with these gears brand bags.

Nice, I'll look into something like that. For now I'll just keep em up in the awkward looking spot.
Had to remove the right side one. This being only my second bike and the first with a kick start, I wasn't thinking and put it right in the way.

Got new bars, grips and mirrors on - huge improvement. Couldn't get my clutch right though and have to head off to work, so I've got a buddy coming by later to give me a hand. Might need a shorter cable, but he may have an idea to route it differently.

Definitely. That stock cable is way too long now. Bike is looking good!
I read a bunch of people saying the stock cables can be saved with some "creative cable routing" but didn't see any photos, so that's why I want a hand from a buddy.

This is the problem with having a newborn - my free time comes in bursts so if I start something and don't finish then I can't ride. Ordered carb rebuild kits today and I'm going to get the same guy coming down today to do do my carbs when the parts come. Time allowing, I'll watch him do it or maybe get him to instruct me on what to do so that next time round I could hopefully do it myself. Then after that the bike will stay how it is until winter.

*Edit:* Didn't look hard enough, I'll give this a shot after work http://www.xs650.com/threads/how-to-route-clutch-and-throttle-cable-with-lower-bars.46870/

These are just plain sexy...what do I need to run these on a 76?

Something to keep the bags from flopping in and getting caught in the rear wheel is a good plan. Yeah I've been burned a few times.
If you keep them far enough forward and capture/tie the lower front so it can't tilt out in the wind the shock will hold them out..

I would want the hard bars to work as a guard....they came from where?
