Can anyone explain the differences between my US spec 1977 XS650 D (imported from the States a few months ago) and the equivalent UK spec model from the same year?

Sir
Not that easy to answer
As I understand it in Europe has been sold two different engine types ( more if the Earliest models are taken into account )
a so Called US model 447 Connecting rod and European model 533 connecting rod.
https://www.xs650shop.de/en/search?sSearch=connecting+rod

So to answer one need to Know what type was sold in UK was it US Spec or Euro spec bike.
That year.
Both perhaps.
It was a while since i Checked this but If I recall right the Pistons at least differ looks that way on the parts link.
Would be interesting to know why the difference was implemented and how it affects the engine

There’s quite a few,
  • Starting at the front the euro model has twin 267mm disks compared to a single 298mm on the American version.
  • The master cylinder is 11/16 (17mm) compared to 14mm on the US machines
  • Stock European model handlebars were also slightly lower and forward of the US bikes.

The frame has many differences.
  • Steering angle is slightly steeper on the Euro models 63.3 degrees and 108mm trail vs 63.0 and 115mm.
  • The Euro models also have an extra brace welded between the downtubes underneath the front engine mount and extra gussets welded between the backbone tube and the seat tubes behind the carbs.
  • These rear tubes are also welded to the central backbone with thicker half tube sleeves.
  • There is also extra reinforcement in the right hand swingarm mount area.
  • Moving on to the engine, as stated above the Euro model came with different pistons, rods and crankshaft.
  • Different paint options
Hope this helps.

I have an 1980 --- XS 650 SE US Custom ,,
without the new type alternator
with points ignition ( from factory ) and have 533 Con Rods.

I didn't know they came out with the 553 motor.........We also had points on our bikes down under until the end of production in 81

Clear as mud then!

It is if you realize the US custom was made for the European market and not available in the US
