Just out of curiosity - Airplane Guys

Oh yeah, the A-10's Daddy.
Yes, the "Sandy." I stood under one at some outdoor park/museum in Florida. Somewhere between Destin and Pensacola. Those things are huge.
There was also that twin fuselage plane from the "Flight of the Phoenix" movie.

I'm only on the 1st page, just started reading it today, but I'm sure that someone would have to mention the Spitfire.

I saw this on the VFT site this morning. If you grew up in the 50`s and didn`t have a model of this one well "You Should Have".

I had the model and hundreds of balsa wood gliders for a nickel! Roger Ramjet!

Like any Air Force Base. Luke has a Public Affairs Office. Give 'em a call. That's what they're there for. I've always found them to be extremely accommodating folk.... kinda goes with the job. Explain to 'em what you're about and what you're trying to do. I wouldn't be surprised if you worked out an escort to help you get your pics.... up close and personal. XS650.com might be just a virtual hangout to us, but to the publicity guys.... it's free publicity...and good exposure.
Go on... I dare ya. :sneaky:
I triple dog dare ya!

I watched the 5:30 news and while I didn't see the nose art clearly the circumstances suggest it was "909" of the Collins Foundation. Not positive it is her. I agree with Mailman about the loss of one engine causing the crash. "Back in the day" returning on a "wing and a prayer" was almost routine.
Maybe the higher octane fuel back then gave it more power.

Beechcraft A-11 3.jpg

My father flew this modified Beechcraft A-11 to train bombardiers during WWII. He had to stay in the US because of high blood #. His brother and his friends went to Europe and flew Mustangs and P-47's. They all came back. Imagine being 21 & 22 and flying the most sophisticated fighters in the world. They were all kids.

Yeah... old joke was that all a twin was good for was getting you to the site of the crash faster.

Ron White told the story about being in a twin engine commuter plane and one engine failed. When the woman asked, " Do you think we'll make it?" Ron says, "Yup, all the way to the crash site!"

Ah, but the C47 flew over the Rockies with one engine and got the US contract. Again, probably more octane.

Remember the airplane documentary show, "Wings?" Great show! I'm the only male in my family that never had a pilot's license. My brother flew Huey gunships his 1st tour and Piper Cubs on his 2nd tour in Vietnam.

I don't know if it was a 50's thing, but my brother and I used to build plastic model planes and hang them from our bedroom ceiling.

Found another Beech shot, but also found my Uncle Howard and his P-47.
If that was my uncle, that picture would be blown up, in a frame, and on my wall. That is beyond cool!

Duesenbergs made all their power on 60 octane gasoline and going big. IIRC, high octane fuel became available in the 50's and 60's, especially when tetraethyl lead was added.

Peter Graves??? Why do I know that name?? Lead guy in "Mission Impossible? Brother to James Arness of "Gunsmoke".
Johnny Quest! One of my favorites! Anyone else remember the XL-5 and the show it was on?
Peter Graves, like his brother James Arness started out in horror flix, like "The Thing from Outer Space," and "Them."
I believe it was "Fireball XL5," with marionettes that came out after the "Super Car", craze! There is a whole thread on old silly shows. "Clutch Cargo?"

Never knew that, Peter Graves, mission impossible, James Arness, cowboy series can’t recollect that one.
Two of my favourite programs on TV when I was a kid, Fireball and Supercar.

They came down the runway single file and right in front of the crowd made a sharp 90º straight up and out of sight one after another
My Harrier experience? A day before the 1997 "OPP Sail" 4th of July celebration that we have had every year since 1976. I was working for a company that was near Teterboro airport and whilst sucking on a Marlboro Red on the loading dock, suddenly 2 Harriers were slowly hoovering over us heading for the airport, probably waiting to land, but they took 2 passes. I will have to say that that was the loudest sound I have ever heard. The 2nd loudest thing was standing next to the dragway watching 2, AA Fuel dragsters taking off down the track.

In a couple of hundred years we will discover that dylithium crystals will greatly enhance this engine and propel us many times past light speed. Today's science fiction is tomorrow's science fact!
Yes, I suddenly have a lot of time on my hands as I am subbing in a high school for masked kids that are working online. Gives me time to catch up on my xs650.com.

Broken foot and all!

Clutch Cargo - was the dog called Paddlefoot? My memory says yes! But then I thought the bikes on CHiPS were CB750s. How could somebody be so wrong? Oh I know, shit for brains.

I grew up in the era of classic Loony Tunes cartoons.

I never could warm up to "supermarionation" and just thought it was goofy. The Clutch Cargo type cartoons where the only thing animated was the mouth was also a bit too goofy for me. Give me Mel Blanc and Bugs Bunny any day!

Also, the Super Connie was the most beautiful prop plane ever built and I regret that I never got to ride one. I DID make one commercial flight on a piston/prop plane. Would have been 1969 or 1970, out of Lansing, Michigan headed to either O'Hare when I was in A school at Great Lakes or to Norfolk VA for crypto school. Pretty sure it was a 4 engine of some sort, but it was a LONG time ago.
