So Ive disassembled my entire engine and am going to rephase the crank. Thought I would give it a shot myself since Im pretty mechanically inclined. I tried just about every method I could to split the crank without a press and had no luck so I guess Im off to the machine shop on Monday to have it pressed apart. Next step is to rephase the cam gonna give it a shot since they are readily available on ebay. Any suggestions/input Im open to hear... By the way Im new to this forum and it has helped me learn so much about my first xs.

I did my crank using stock wedges and step blocks. It was unbelievably easy. The wedges multiply the down force over ten times and convert it to a spreading force. I started using a press but it took so little force to get things moving that I realized the press was unnecessary. I finished it by simply smacking the wedges alternately with a little 16oz ball peen hammer. Quick, easy, and cheap.

A press was used to put it back together. This was just a cheap Chinese "12 Ton" press. The stock wedges were used as spacers between the crank webs so it could be pressed together from the ends without disturbing the rod pins. I made clamps to hold the wedges but later realized that these are unnecessary. Simply tapping the wedges into place would have worked fine.

If you are just building a street motor then this should be all you need to do. If you plan to rev the shit out of it, like Punkskalar, then you should probably have him weld one up for you.

I'll be doing a similar thing with mine, any more tips tricks, I will be using jigs that I made up to do cranks at home (used to re-build dirt bike motors for people) can some one chime in with the amount of splines to be rotated, I have heard 3 splines forward with the right side rolling forward over the left..??

Cheers.

A couple 5/8 bolts with nuts along with some spacers will do the trick.

Hi guys, been reading here for a long time, first post however.

Can I get more information on the bolts and spacers method of splitting the crankshaft please? Also, in the picture above where can those steel wedges be purchased, any ideas?

Love the site, read it almost every day

My crank is split but I've no idea how to get the cam chain gear off so it can be rotated too. Any ideas guys?

.... An hour later I rented a gear puller. worked just fine.

If you go to the XS650 garage USA site page 5 modified engines 277 rephrase. The whole process is explained with Pictures pressing and truing. I bought a 20 ton press on sale harbor freight $100 on sale. XS leo and I Pressed and trued a couple of cranks 1 360 and 277 we changed out both rods. If you are not changing to new performance rods and pins less you need to disassemble as much. . A caveman could do it. If there any cavemen viewing no offence. I'm an ape man my self. :D

Ahh, I gotcha, makes perfect sense now. Thanks Brian for your super fast response. This xs community is remarkable, so glad I stumbled upon it when I started out wanting to chop and old triumph or norton. Went this route instead (cos of price and availability at the time) only to discover what an awesome community and support base was to be included. One of my better decisions ever! Good thing as I sure like making bad decisions.....
