Tools - JIS screwdrivers (Pete’s annual rant)

They have the "Vessel" name stamped on them. As long as none of your other bits are this brand, that should do.

My Sealey JIS drivers arrirved today.
First glance, they look fine. Time will tell.
As a new development, Amazon is throwing up related JIS bit inserts, which were absent before. Might chance some of those, too.

A friend bought a set of JIS screwdrivers from an on line store and I found the handle diameter to be quite small. The Vessel drivers have a nice, stout handle. Smaller diameter ok for most work but the larger are nice for stubborn screws. A non slip handle is nice too.

I concur. The Vessel is first quality.

All this talk about screwdrivers. Now I’ve bought more. Last time I counted I owned over 125 screwdrivers not including ones with interchangeable tips. I think for fun I’ll do a Phillips screwdriver recount this afternoon. FWIW that’s one of the things retired people do for entertainment. Lol

I have a toolbox full of them myself. Since I'm not retired, I'm not going to count them.

Just received my JIS bits in the mail. I use different coloured heat shrink tube to ID different bits so they’re easy to grab when needed.

Now THAT is a good idea!

...which I will shamelessly appropriate. Thanks Bosco!

DO NOT USE PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVERS ON YOUR XS650!
You wouldn’t use a butter knife to drive in a nail would you?

Pete
Well actually there was that time, when my old Datsun broke down on the side of the road.... It wasn't a butter knife, just an old hunting knife and I still have all my fingers. Lots of cursing, blood and tears. stuff falling into your eyes while you are on your back under the truck banging on an old starter motor. anyway I survived. Will look into getting that screw driver set. Thanks. I have a hard time finding Canadian supplier of stuff.

Bought mine out of London, Ont.

Mention on one of the sites of actual proper traditional impact bits to fit JIS, had me looking.
I found some 5/16th / 8mm bits this side of the pond and they're the exact size for the hammer-driven impact driver I've had for decades.
The finest cross-point bit on that is at its end-of-life, and I'd thought there was almost no chance of finding a replacement, until these showed up...

Thank you, Grimly, you just made me spend another tenner on tools!

Me old impact bits are well tired so I was needing to find new ones anyway.

I like the vessel impacta. You can whack it with a hammer and get 3* of rotation. So no digging out the impact driver, just keep using 1 screwdriver.

The Impacta driver I have is a strike-through with no twisting action. Six or eight rapid taps on the end is enough to loosen most things.

I believe that Ratranger is correct. If the driver really is an Impacta, there will be a small amount of rotation when you strike the steel cap on the handle. It isn’t much, but it’s there.

The one I have is the earlier red/black handled one #2 JIS
I don't recall any mention of twist in the sales blurb and I've never noticed it.
It's very effective anyway. Apart from that one damned drain screw on the leftmost carb bowl on the XJ, and I can't wallop it too much.

Well Pete, I must say, an excellent thread. I'd never heard of JIS drivers till I spotted your thread. Thought all crossheads were Philips. How wrong can you be eh?! And me being an old git too!! Should know better. Cheers for the advice, will pick up a set. Mind, I tend to swap out all screws for socket head capscrews where I can, as I much prefer them.
