I think it was the 1950's when NASCAR stopped using stock cars, largely because they thought the public wanted to see faster race cars at the larger tracks.Not stock cars anymore

We sometimes changed engines between heats (4 bolts, 2 wires and a fuel line)

Since then it has been a gradual move towards the sportscar, with tubular frames in the 70's, and fuel injection in 2012 and so on.
Occasionally I go see a local race at a tiny 1/4 mile dirt track because they will have a real stock car class called "Strictly Stock".
