Welp.

Fiddled with the carb settings until it wouldn't start. Read forum posts about the differences between stock carbs from different years. Found out I had my air screw too far in by a full turn. Reset them and she started.

Reached in between and tweaked the sync screw after it warmed up. Running smoother than ever. 90% of the popping on decel is gone to boot.

You guys are the greatest.

Cheers yall

Tonight I brought home my engine stand, found the adapter I made and threw my 650 motor on it, I also pressed off my cam sprocket and put my cam in the freezer and helped my youngest with his bicycle.

Just fried my handy HF ultrasonic cleaner by over filling while trying to loosen up my throttle grip from the metal...came off anyway in boiling water. Sort of gave new life to the old original grip. That said, was about to order some silligrips and was trying to take some measurements. Those grips probably go over a 1" pipe. Did polish up the other lower fork and the rear brake cover. nothing done yesterday. The electricity went out later day. Going to seal up the next cleaner to better standards....and be more careful. OK, leme go rub some cleaner on my copper rotor parts.

Yes, that boot needs to be in good working order. It hangs upside down. If it's split or damaged, it just becomes a little 'bucket' that catches all the dirt and moisture slung at it My boot had a little slit where the wire ran through it. Wasn't very big.... just big enough.

Nice, Jim. That terminal looks like it was from a model T that is still in the junk yard! Hey, when I replaced my starter a few years back, my boots were shot. I went everywhere to find new ones and found nothing. Suddenly, whilst going thru the metal cabinet that gets some not so often used stuff thrown in to it, I came across an old set of custom, make your own plug wires. There were 2 or 3 different types and thicknesses of caps and with a little razor trimming, I was back in business.

Yeah, on my HF ultrasonic cleaner I was reading a review where someone had done that, before I first used mine I used some silicone caulk to seal up the space between the tank and the plastic housing. My old cleaner looks like it fell off the back of a truck, the plastic housing has cracks all over it, but it still works and heats up, so I’m using it until it blows! :laugh2:

Further learnings have occurred.

Pull the right plug at idle and it dies. However, pull the right plug at idle with the CHOKE ON, and the left side lives. Turn the choke off and it dies.

I suspect a vacuum leak.

Also breaking up some and popping at cruise but not WOT. Maybe lean in the middle?

1986 Kawasaki ZX600JKAZX4A14GA039660 built at the Plant AKASHI JAPAN with a new task to please the biker.
bead breaker, centering, lacing and balancing stand, all in one. I used the neck and the half frame of a ZX600, a fork tube of a 1976 KZ750B1, the adjustable depth and height stop from an ancient Singer sewing machine, the lever in chrome vanadium from the scrap yard

many thanks to Kawasaki, thanks you to my imagination and my handy skills, HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!

I just finished another front Wheel TX750/TX650!!

Back to sanding the bottom of my oil pump cover. Re measured the depth of the flat sides of impellers below the covers edge again....only coming up w/ 0.013" The details this last week are getting to me if it's sanding/ polishing aluminum, ordering wrong parts or driving 80 miles to pick up parts to find I take home a wrong part and not like another part, both being the reason I made an 80 mi. round trip.

The SG started to blow the 10A fuse for Instruments and brakelights. Starteded with the tailight and rear fender, looking at wires for bare wire spots and running the VOM on them for shorts. Nothing. Opened up the headlight rat's nest for worn wire spots. NADA. Hmmmm. Moved the insulating sleeve on the rear fender to a better position to protect the 3 wires going to the tailight. Reassembled and op checked it . No fuses were blown. Good enough for me. Road test tomarrow. First stop after Carl's Jr is Autozone for restock of 10 A fuses. The newer plastic ones. Got rid of the stock glass ones years ago.

New idle adjustment screw on the BS38’s. Should be easy to tweak even with gloves on. Drilled out the brass knob, turned down the head of the screw and press fit it into the knob with a bit of Loctite for good measure. Thanks to a local XS owner for the idle screw!

Nice work! And by the way, I’m enjoying looking at your bike on my calendar right now! Such attention to detail everywhere you look!

Said I wasn't going to touch the bike again this weekend. Polished up outside of the speedo drive, banged a bearing into the ft hub. Stood, stared, went to the diagrams...part #'s (#10 on '72 rubber seal: 93105-45017-00) saying "No way..wrong seal'. Saw an SD 60 72 7 on the table that fit in the hub and the speedo drive cover like a glove. @ Ats could not find it. Wasted another hour. :umm: Mike's had it listed as the correct 70-72 part vs the one in the old diagrams! :shootme: OK, put the other bearing in the freezer and will stuff that one in on top of the thick spacer, atop the tube center spacer. Not going to sneak back out there on Easter banging a hammer. Lost my long tach drive worm gear thing....! details.

Broke my phone. With carb cleaner. No joke.

Solved all my problems. The long suspected vacuum leak turned out to be a screw missing on the port carb. Direct hole behind the butterfly into the cylinder. Stacked some washers and screwed into it.

Runs like new. Only 7,000 miles to begin with. You guys are the greatest.

Cheers yall

Looking for a chain guard in lieu of my original to adapt to my '72 so as to use aftermarket shocks and springs. I see that the Specials had a cut out for clearing the springs. maybe I could adapt this : https://yamahaxs650.com/product/chain-guard-chrome/. I could delete that guard all together but would be touching up the frame paint allot. Finished cleaning sanding fork valve assembly. Forks al ready now.

What brand of shocks are you looking at? Hagon should fit with your stock chain guard, and I’m running Ikon shocks on my XS2 that fit just fine. I wrote a review of them here,
