What have you done to your XS today?

$600 for those? Someone else I know who rides sporty just bought some and said they're worth it.

I didn’t pay that much, I got a deal on EBay, some guy bought the wrong size shocks and returned those. So the eBay seller sold them as used in the original packaging. I do really like them they ride nice and look to be high quality. My stock shocks were like a punch to the kidneys on a rough road!

Tried to turn over the girl with starter fluid.. no luck.
Pulled and replaced the plugs, grounded the plug looking for spark..none! Looked at the fuses and the ignition fuse was blown. Replaced it and immediately blew as soon as it made contact.
this thing obviously needs a complete re-wire.

Bike has a PMA and electronic ignition, starter is on but currently disabled.

Thinking I'll build my own harness like this guy:
(timestamp of 00:30),

and order a box from this fella on the vendor list:

and a fuse box like this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081NDGVLB/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5?smid=A1RID58DUOHMSN&psc=1
ignition like this: http://www.tcbroschoppers.com/universal-ignition-switch.html
and probably a capacitor or small battery.

what am I missing? I need some bulk wiring and clamps. Does anyone have any recommendations for type or gauge? I am not in a huge rush to get this build done, but I am under some budget constraints

Is your fuse box just sitting on metal? Or is the bottom isolated?

You know, if I had waited one day to order shocks, really several hours and saw this...and found the Ikon USA site, I would have gone with these and used my original chain guard. Those chain guards are beefy, I could always get my Dremel cutter out :). I have a little rub mark from the original shock right where your bend is. I don't see many old chain guards like this come up even in condition like mine fine on all sides but the top form condensation. To makie it all shiny/ perfect, the whole thing would need re-chrome... :( P1010157.JPG .

I'd wait before cutting that one. See if you can find one in really bad shape. I found a really nice one, was going to use it and couldn't bring myself to hack it up as needed to be to use on my shocks. I used a much lesser condition one off of a parts bike.

Yep, all sorts of stuff running through my head. just got of the phone with the Ikon, USA fellow. Sent him the link to Mailman's Ikon review w/ the pics. Ikon home base is working hard to catch up on back log. But, shipping logistics big problem for various reasons + USA doesn't know exactly what may be sent. After speaking with M.Morse yesterday...just said send me those progressives, don't over-spring me. I'll just wax the chain, leave the guard off and keep it clean.I can rig a couple of aluminum splatter shields no bigger than playing cards from the 2 outside mouning points. Save me from rocks, grit. I'll jump the median If I have to run through a puddle. I ain't riding in bad weather...no cloudy days.
High tech sophisticated logistics, GPS, and the ripple effects of any flaws in that (Covid) shows just how fragile the system is....whole nother discussion.:offtopic:

Preparing for a Sunday local ride.
Plugs pulled and cleaned, carbs drained to look for debris, clean enough.
Finally determined the actual length of hardware needed for my side covers.
Rode to the nearest hardware store downtown.
Two 6mm bolts each, 8 plastic washers, 4 rubber washers,
They're on but not secured too adequately yet. I'm using the existing threaded holes on the battery box which were for the airbox halves.
Wanting to further tune the carbs tomorrow but cold rain is back!... Sunday

Preparing for rain Sun./Mon.myself so, bi-cycling this AM then some car work, then back to polishing, lacing rear wheel (made bonzi run to Mike's to swap out rear wheels 1.85 for a 2.5 X 18") and other odds n ends. Zillion mobile homes trucks w/ campers, etc. headed back North and road construction made a 1.5 hr drive into 2+. See how much I get done.

When I discovered the 60mm length breather box bolts were the best fit for a side cover mount, utilizing the airbox mount holes.
So I upgraded to a shinier #3 Philips 60mm fastener. Looks nicer.
Plugs back in, mixture screws checked and set 1/2 turn leaner.
Looking forward to a Sunday sunshine test ride further from home.

With an Eye to the Future
So I was starting to rehab a motor and pulled the bottom plate off. It was so cruddy that I got my cheapo parts cleaner out and soaked it for a while. Figuring if I was already stinking of solvent I might as well clean up my stack of filter paraphernalia, I doused 5 in the bath. The original has the drain plug stuck mightily in the plate so it's waiting for a bigger hammer, but 4 turned out nice. Alternately soaking, scraping and ultimately wire wheeling got them ready to give them a rub on some sandpaper on a glass plate.
The crud in the bottom of the tank was surprising.
But they are clean and my hands are only a little tingly.

Humm, little longer swing arm and like Machine's and I could use a later dated chain guard for wider rear springs. Not as much done as I would have liked over weekend. Did lace up the new aluminum rear wheel and went shinny on the ft. drive cover vs clean and light polish on ft. and rear hubs/ brake cover. Thank G_d for 5T's real lace pic as a reminder not to lace the rear just like the ft. at 4:40 AM. Found that tacho driven gear/ rod after looking 3 weeks...Had bought every o-ring, do-dad Partzilla had to offer for that tach assembly. Think I'll drop off those tires, rims, tubes up the street @ the BMW dealer and let them mount the stuff while I decide what contraption I come up with to true/ balance them. H.F. has one for $39. I could probably just use my axles (thru the wheel bearings) and clamp the axle ends to the top of some of my HD jack stands...no biggie making that level. May be find a longer steel rod.

Finished the rewiring on my Heritage to completely remove the headlight safety relay section, the reserve lighting relay, and instead mounted a headlight switch and a pair of actual relays for the headlight itself. I am running LED's. For some reason the factory wiring would get cross voltage and trip the light to high beam then low beam then on and off. I couldn't figure it out after bypassing every component. SO i said screw it opened up the entire harness, removed all the unnecessary wiring and added two relays and a 6 blade fuse box where the old reserve lighting relay was. Worked like a charm.
Just received front and rear wheel bearings, tapered headset bearing are on the way, replaced the rear brake pads, and even got another set of main jets from 135-159.5 to dial in the top end fueling as well as small round jets the BS34 use as air jets from 110-185. I have 4 different needles and 3 different needle jets. When its on its wheels again, going to be spending a long time dialing in the BS34 to perfection. Been toying around with the idea of pulling out the pressed in air jet and tapping it for a pilot jet so i can control the mid to top end air jetting as well. Anyone tried that before?

Reinstalled the valves...

Taking care to allign the "japan" marking.... as for polishing the pistons, no one will ever know but me !

When you're officially crazy...
