My finishing schedule in the winter/sprinter of 2018.
1. Hand sand with 320 Grit Wet/Dry paper soaked in water
2. Hand sand with 400 Grit Wet/Dry paper soaked in water
3. Hand sand with 600 Grit Wet/Dry paper soaked in water
4. Hand sand with 800 Grit Wet/Dry paper soaked in water
5. Hand sand with 1000 Grit Wet/Dry paper soaked in water
6. Buff with Black Emery bar on cloth wheel
7. Buff with White Diamond bar on cloth wheel
8. Buff with Red Rouge bar on cloth wheel
9. Buff with Green Honing Compound on cloth wheel
10. Buff with Autosol with cloth wheel.
This case was in pretty bad shape so I had to start with 320 grit. Try using something finer first as that will save you some steps/time.
The Red and Green compounds aren't always really necessary. You just have to try them and see if the extra work is worth it.
Note: the Green Veritas honing compound I sometimes find worth using finishes to a 0.5 micron or 0000.2 inch scratch pattern. It does leave a light wax film but it is designed for tool polishing and I don't know how it would hold up to exterior elements so I always finish with hand or power buffing with Autosol to give some further protection. Can't find the specs for the grit size in Autosol but it will dull and scratch the green bar finish somewhat, sometimes.
