OK, I'll bite 2M, What the heck is it? Kind looks like a lathe headstock at the far end, and some kind of vertical feeder/adjuster at this end.......but?

@robinc HaHa, robinc. After nearly 5 years I finally get a bite, and it's YOU dangling on the hook.

That's a modified budget 40" wood lathe. The wooden box thing is a moving carriage. It has a pair of clamps, with leather padded jaws. The jaws are connected using a 'differential thread' trick. Turning the crank, the jaws move in/out equally, maintaining a center.

I designed a very-low-speed leadscrew drive for the thing, advances the box-carriage around 0.001"-0.002" per second.

This whole rig serves 1 purpose: To bore pistol and rifle barrels in preparation for a relining tube. Strictly for .22 std and magnum. There's an oil feeder mechanism (not shown) that keeps the bore flooded with cutting oil during the deep-hole boring cuts. A .22 barrel is fitted into the self-centering box-carriage clamps, they keep the barrel bore centered on the lathe drillbit's centerline. And, the box-carriage slowly feeds the barrel onto the bore drill.

Some antique Winchester barrels are hardened, and this whole boring process can take a couple of hours. Quite tedious...

@TwoManyXS1Bs Ha Ha, well there you go. Leave it to you to engineer a specialty rig like this.

I knew 'Something' had to go into those carriage openings, but couldn't imagine what.
Very cool idea and execution. Would love to see it in action.

Take care my friend.
