Any reason why this screw would not work?

    Fuel Petcock Screws

I am about to start rehabilitating my rusty original 1981 XS650SH fuel tank. I have a new petcock, but it came without screws. I even have YAMAHA emblems I can paint. Can someone tell me the size and pitch so I can get stainless steel screws from Home Depot? Thanks to all. Carveacre in...

    Crud in the Oil

I have 3 possibles, and I don’t know which to get. EBay, Mikes XS, or XS650 direct.

    Crud in the Oil

No, there is a 3/4 inch square hole in the mesh. I have replaced the sump filter

    Crud in the Oil

1981 XS650SH stored in a damp shed for 28 years. My previous thread was Got it Back. I changed the oil and filters, and scraped some crud that looks like broken pieces of black plastic off the small filter. Nothing on the sump filter. What could this crud be? With the new oil and filters...

I wrote the above reply before I saw the spanner you made. If that’s the ticket, I can do that. Thank you for your consideration. Carveacre in Alpine, CA

    Got it Back

I tried tapping hardwood dowels in the holes and prying sideways in a twisting motion with a lever. No joy. I might have to try heating the casing around the cover, but that is a last resort. Don’t want to scorch the aluminum casing. I have also thought of fabbing up a spanner of just the...

    Got it Back

I used a skinny knife blade as a scraper and scraped the grove of all dirt and crud, then squirted more penetrating oil. It does not want to budge. Next I will apply Gorilla tape to the cover and try to yank it off.

    Got it Back

I have removed the 6mm Allen head set screws, and I have been gently trying to tease off the cover. Right now, it is getting a soaking with penetrating oil. This cover has not been removed in 40 years.

    Got it Back

okay, I ordered the headlight. Now, does anybody have a technique for removing the round, aluminum 2-screw oil filter cover? I have not touched it with a blade screwdriver. It would seem to me that any attempt to pry it off will booger up the case. I put 2 drill bits in the holes and gently...

    Got it Back

Going to give this a lot of thought before I commit to a plan. BTW, my right side cover came in the mail today. With a little PlastX and some TLC, it will be nearly perfect. Minor imperfections in the clear coat, but they will polish out. Nothing broken, cracked chipped or missing. In an...

Thanks for the heads up. I will inspect what I have before I buy anything.

    Got it Back

Thanks a million. I get more confident every day. I will be getting the head pipes and I will try to save the mufflers, which are not too bad. A little surface rust, but shines up with 0000 steel wool. Is there a treatment that will prevent rust from returning on chrome? If it works on...

    Got it Back

Has anybody had any experience with the 1.5“ head pipes part #07-0757 from yamahaxs650.com for $125? That seems to be a reasonable price if the fit and the chrome are good. Don’t want them if they turn blue in a month. Sincerely appreciate all the help I am getting from the group. Carveacre...
