Sticking valve or? Hard cold start.

Thanks - when I checked the valve clearances as I recall three were within spec and only one I had to adjust, but only slightly. Ignition settings were also spot on so it seems the PO had that all covered. I was wondering if it could be caused by the oil put in, Lucas full synthetic 20W-50 as I...

Sticking valve or? Hard cold start.

Thanks, yes, definitely from the top of the engine. Just tried it again, bike had sat since Thursday. Very difficult start, had to go electric, loud tick that stopped when I revved the engine, as has become the pattern. Shut it off, then a half a kick, really effortless, and she started purring...

Sticking valve or? Hard cold start.

Thanks 5twins. I cleaned the carbs thoroughly in the Spring. The issue isn't, I believe, with the fuel or spark. It's that something, I am thinking a valve or the chain tensioner, is sticking causing not enough compression etc, leading to tough start. Identical conditions starting the next day...

Sticking valve or? Hard cold start.

Thanks xjwmx. The odd thing for me is that, if I start it cold a day just after I"ve ridden it, it starts up during the first kick and there is no ticking noise at all. But if I wait a few more days, it will take 5-10 or even more kicks and there's a very loud tick that disappears after a couple...

Sticking valve or? Hard cold start.

My '76 has become difficult to kick start when cold, after sitting for a few days. When it finally does start, there is a clear ticking sound from the engine that disappears after maybe 8-10 seconds. If I stop the engine right then and kick-start it again, it fires up immediately, one kick, as...

Nice! I particularly like the whitewalls, they suit this model well.

    Gunson Color Tune

I used these once to tune the dual carburetors on my '71 Spitfire. It was a perfect way to adjust the mixture and I was very pleased with the result. So much so that I recently bought another set to tune my '69 Mercedes. Highly recommended.

    getting handle grip off

I've always used a bit of gasoline: open up a crack with a screwdriver, poor some gasoline in there and twist, they come off easily. Same procedure to put back on. The nice thing about using gasoline is it evaporates quickly, no need to clean off (like with WD40, which is actually not possible...

    Not reaching top speed

Allemachtig! Dat gaat best hard! En in de bebouwde kom zo te zien! ;-) Looks like you made huge progress, I don't think mine is all that much faster.

    Not reaching top speed

Wow that's costly, almost €300 for the TCI unit. Another Dutch aftermarket ignition components company! Please let us know how it turns out for you.

    Not reaching top speed

At least you figured out the problem. Although I am not looking to 'moderrnize' my '76 point ignition, when I did so on a '69 oldtimer Mercedes, the effect on how the engine ran was significant. I installed an electronic ignition (from the Dutch company 1-2-3) and the results were really...

    Wanted - Gauge rubber

There are several sources that sell these, including NOS and replicas. I found NOS items at CMSNL in my native Holland, and recently saw some links in another thread here to aftermarket rubber item sellers websites that included these seals - sorry don't recall where I saw those links, but there...
